HUGE mistake on Jeopardy last night!!

I can't believe this hasn't been addressed already in the news.

During the end of double Jeopardy the current champ hit a daily double on a $2000 question, bet $5000 as he has been doing all along and then got the answer wrong. Alex Trebek even says, that'll drop you down to $8,000 something from $13,000. But his score only dropped by FIVE dollars, not $5000.

Then during final Jeopardy, he beat the second place player, but only by $1,000!! If the score had been tallied correctly he should have LOST by $4,000. I kept waiting for them to catch it and correct it, but they never did.

We watched it over and over at least five times. We have it recorded because we were late watching it.
Some people are claiming the guy only wagered $5, but that's BS. He was an 8 day champion and consistently bet $5000 on EVERY daily double when he could.

Why would he even pick a $2,000 question and then bet only $5...that makes ZERO sense.
They need to make this right for the lady that ACTUALLY won last night.

I haven't Seen it or heard anything about it anywhere, but these shows are taped and edited so I find it hard to believe that they would deliberately air an episode with such a blatant error... I did a google search and see nothing turns up yet but has anyone found anything on this?

My wife was looking it up while it was still on last night and people were already tweeting about it. We weren't the only ones that noticed. Here's a video...

I don't understand how something like this could have gone unnoticed or unchallenged throughout the entire production process.

I'll guarantee you the producers have already gotten plenty of reaction and feedback.

From the video, sounded like he said "5" and Alex said "5 it is". However, the closed caption did say $5000.

...and, if you watch his mouth, it LOOKS like he's saying a "deee" sound...not a "tuh" sound---still, does anybody EVER bet 5 dollars on a DD? Seems unusual.

Agreed, I think that's how they will justify it... The implication probably was 5,000 but being he only said the word 5 that's what they went with.

Contestants should have to clearly state their wagers. No shorthand nonsense. 'Five' could mean $5.00, $500.00, or 5,000.00.

Alex Trebek should have made Matt clarify his wager.

Sounded like $5 to me. But Alex certainly says his score as $8,395 after that. I did not notice any of this last night.

I noticed this guy shortens everything and they allow it...for instance he says "2" for $200 or "5" for $500 when choosing categories, also saying only one word out of the category instead of the title.
They certainly could make the case as to him saying 5 and meaning 5000. Id say the losing contestant certainly has a case.

This is interesting to note. Someone wrote this on the Jeopardy! Facebook page:

Alex said "Your LEAD is now reduced to $8,395" not "your TOTAL is..." By saying LEAD, Alex was saying Matt had $8,395 MORE than the next closest person. That person had $5,000 so Alex knew Matt bet $5 and then only had $13,395 after, which was $8,395 MORE than the other closest person.
I haven't watched it again to see if this is correct, but seems feasible. I think it was just a lot of strange wording by the both of them. BTW, these are taped so far in advance they would have caught this ages ago.

I just don't know what to think. The guy was clearly confident enough in the category to go after the $2000 question, but then only wagers $5?
That just makes no sense to me.
