Just wondering if any members here are into the football (erm, that might be soccer to many of you) and which team/s you follow or support? I know there's some interest in the U.S. in our Premier League teams. Stallone is an Everton fan and Tom Hanks is an Aston Villa fan. Good old Tom, I'm a Villa fan born and bred.

When I lived in Mexico ages 7-14, I became a Chivas Rayadas de Guadalajara fan.
Internationally I follow both Mexico and USA.
As far as following English Premier, well, I don't follow it much...too busy watching the NFL and NBA, my two favorite pro team sports leagues right now.
However, if there is one team in EPL that I'll cheer over everyone else, it would be your team, Aston Villa.
I'll tell you why. My friend was Michael Tummey. He was a dedicated member of various forums, notably the main official Aston Villa forum. But I met him through a boxing forum, called BOXINGFANATICS...he went by the username, Witton Lane.
He was a great bloke, one of the funniest posters there, he was a riot, lol.
He had traveled to the USA a few times. We never hooked up in person...but we were going to eventually. He was set to come to the San Francisco Bay Area (Northern California)...I was finally going to meet up with him...when he suffered a fatal heart attack at age 41, what a devastating and shocking turn of events...
A STAUNCH Villa supporter collapsed and died just an hour after posting on an internet forum about the McLeish controversy.
We had a super friendly online relationship. We used to exchange stuff over the mail. Michael loved food, especially Mexican food (he really discovered it traveling through the States). I sent him a bunch of Mexican products, sauces, etc...he really loved Mexican mole. I'd sent him bottled mole paste...I'd give him instructions how to make it...and he'd go through the entire thing, lol. Prior to him discovering mole...curry was his favorite...but afterwards, mole was his thing. He introduced Mexican mole to his entire family and friends. If mole ever takes off in England...remember...it was Michael Tummey who started the ball rolling, lol.
Here are some of the stuff I sent him...
I never asked anything in return, I loved sending and introducing this English bloke Mexican sauces. But Michael was such a cool dude...he just said, "what shirt size are you? What's your last name? What's your favorite jersey number?" I said, without suspecting a thing, "I'm XXL, my last name is Zacarias, and my favorite jersey number is 00, after the late great Oakland Raider's Jim Otto."
Well, that was the end of that conversation.
A couple of months later...this arrived at my home...
Michael Tummey as a young lad (left)...
Mmm, yummy...
I figured since you are an Aston Villa fan...that you'd appreciate hearing about Michael Tummey.
RIP, buddy...

WOW. What an amazing story! The Witton Lane username makes sense. It's the road that runs straight outside Villa Park. Fantastic that you made such a friend and that you show your support for the claret and blues because of him.
I was reading your post on my phone and as you explained he asked what shirt size you were, etc, I knew what was coming. I can tell you though I still got cold tingles all over when I saw that shirt.
I never expected a reply like thatComment

I really enjoy soccer (football) which infact is the more proper name considering your kicking a ball with your feet,
here in the U.S. we have what's called the MLS, but I follow Manchester United and try to watch them when there
games are shown in the U.S.Comment

As you say though, Villa FOREVER!!!

In the Premier league I root for the Gunners, not because of Alexis Sánchez, but mostly because of the memories of the great Dennis Bergkamp playing for them. Nowadays I like the way the United plays, but if I had to pick one player in the Premier then that would have to be Theo Walcott.
Anyway, here's my hero

Agreed ^^^^
And this thread unfortunately just started before the start of the NFL and college football seasons...first NFL game was this past Thursday night...now today, Sunday...first official opening week...Americans are glued to their TVs right now.
After American football (both NFL and college)...I'd say basketball (NBA and college) are next...then baseball (MLB, Minor Leagues, college)...then hockey. Football (soccer is behind all those other games here in the States).
That's unfortunate, for soccer is a wonderful game.Last edited by Hector; Sep 13, '15, 4:21 PM.sigpicComment
