A question about American (and Canadian) homes!

Whenever I watch American movies and TV shows, you see that people seem to leave all their lights on, even when they're not home.
So somebody in a movie comes home, and all lights are still on from when they left that morning.

Is this so in real life?
Or is this something they make up?

my kids leave every damn light in the house on, and I am always walking through turning them off and yelling at them about it. we usually leave the light in the living room on when we go out and won't be back before dark. it's just so it is not so dark inside when you come back in. don't want someone jumping you out of the shadows after all, LOL

I have a dim nightlight in the living room I leave on all night.

I'll put it on when I know i'm going to be gone out at night.

          Same here..... kids...

We do leave a light on in the kitchen, low wattage above the sink. Aside from that and a night light or two in the evening, stuff is off in our house when we leave.

It's a production need. Striking the set lights beforehand makes it quicker to shoot. No need to balance the color intake. It's also a holdover from shooting film without on-set replay. You wouldn't know what you got until the dailies were processed.

That makes sense. But it does give the impression that electricity is free in your side of the pond!

I think I started noticing that in Hill Street Blues. I kept thinking "Furillo, put out that lamp! And that one, too!"

Yes and when we turn the lights out in the bedroom we are also bathed in a bright blue light.

People walk in without knocking and the door is never locked.

We leave our shoes on when coming in the house.

My neighbour is a whacky unemployed man who is always getting into hilarious adventures.

Whenever I want somebody to see a news report on TV, it's cued up to the exact point I want them to see, everytime.

Hahaha! Like what you did there, if I've reckoned correctly. (I love both of those shows and they are in the same universe)

We turn our lights off when not at home. I do, however, leave all the ceiling fans running 24/7.

And yes, we have a coffee table. I don't think I've ever NOT had one in my entire life.
