Anybody ever have Wiener Schnitzel ?

My local firehouse just sent out it's early Oktoberfest invites.

No way I ever pass it up considering it's in walking distance

They say this year they're going to feature Wiener Schnitzel.

I know I've heard of it many times on TV but I don't think I've ever had it.

    Any good ?

Yes! I had one a few years back at a diner close to a hotel in Mission BC with Mushrooms and gravy. It was excellent!

Used to work in a German restaurant, they did it up really good Schnitzel Holstein with an egg and anchovies on top.

        If properly prepared, it's great.
But, like hamburgers, there are good ones and bad ones out there. Sometimes they use inferior meat (with lots of fat and gristle) and you can't tell fom the outside, until you take the first bite.

Had some in Germany years ago when my AirForce buddy was stationed there. We attended the Wine Festival in Bernkastel (which was a scene of complete debauchery) and found a nice restaurant that served some excellent Schnitzel. The Schnitzel was complimented by some cold beer that just kept coming. Finally as we were ready to stumble to our car, the server insisted on giving us a warm shot of Schnapps to prepare us for the cold weather outside. When in Rome.....

Its veal, if someone is passing pork off as Schnitzel, for shame.

I'm half "off the boat" German, so yes, about a dozen times a year or more.

It's easily the most approachable of German cuisine and normally, pretty hard to screw up.

                    Thanks guys

not knowing anything about a lot of German food I always imagined it to be some sort of sausage dish - probably because of weiner in the name.

I had it once, in Germany about 3 decades ago. I seem to remember it being a bit tough to chew. Stuck with the Bratwurst und Brochen after that.

Perhaps it would be better to call it Vienna schnitzel in America. No sausages involved!
If my rusty German still works, the translation would be something like "cut of meat, Vienna style".

My mother-in-law used to make it on special occasions. Loved it Holstein style with an egg on top. So good, but if it's done right, it probably takes about 2 months off of your life expectancy.

I've got her recipe kicking around and should probably fire some up this fall and treat myself if I can put a couple hours in on the treadmill first.

Wiener Schnitzel is the national dish of Austria and made with veal.

"A Schnitzel made of pork can be called "Schnitzel Wiener Art" (Viennese style schnitzel) or "Wiener Schnitzel vom Schwein" (Viennese schnitzel from pork). The Verwaltungsgericht Arnsberg 2009 decided about the acceptability of the latter name. The result was that in common parlance in Germany, a "Wiener Schnitzel" no more referred exclusively to a veal dish, but instead to a breaded steak in general."

I've had the pork version and the American chicken-fried steak several times. They can be hard to chew.
