    Question about modern rock concerts

Remember the old days going to rock concerts and you'd have to go through security looking specifically for hidden cameras (video and still) or tape recorders ?

In today's world of having all that on your cell phone do they still insist nobody takes picture, records or videos the concert ?

    Just wondering

Nah, I just went to a concert on Tuesday, we were allowed to tape everything. We even got into sound check and took a million photos and videos. There is so much youtube footge of this concert that you can see my big dumb head in this video.

It was awesome but I woke up very sore, I'm not 23 anymore...

Getting back to Mike's original question, I think there is no fighting it anymore and bands see it as promotion.

        Comedians freaking hate it though.

Some of the older bands are trying to fight it now. Just one example:

Contrast that with Mr. Billy Idol in the following video (at the 20 second mark he sees the fan is recording and actually sings to them for several seconds):

I think Youtube is the new era of advertising. Bands who fight against camera phones are only hurting themselves. It's far from being a replacement to being there, so it shouldn't have a negative impact to those putting on a great show. Quite the contrary, it usually gets more people in. The Eagles have sadly become a snoot band. They want to maximize their profits at the cost of making you feel unwelcomed.

The last Rick concert I went to a couple of years ago specifically said no cameras, but that's a joke, b/c they can't take everyone's cell phones away. I just left my camera in my hotel room.

Last concert I went to was Ozzy Osbourne and Rob Zombie at the Pyramid in Memphis in 03. They frisked everybody before we went in. I dont remember them saying much about pictures or phones back then. I was just trying to stay on my feet. Back then they still allowed general admission with no seats and we were really close it was insane! Had I known how bad it was I dont know if I would have gone. I was in my early twenties and 5'10' 260 pounds and found it hard to stay on my feet. It was wild. People who were my age and older were alright but the young people were in bad shape, I mean bloody and bad drunk/drugged. Ozzy however was great, voice was phenomenal and Zak Wylde on guitar was like Thor.

It seems like it really depends on the venue and/or the artist, anymore. It's pretty hard to enforce it unless you're walking in with some big, high-quality camera or recording gear, then they'll usually give you a hard time. I always encourage fans to film our shows and take pics when possible, but when we've played bigger shows and fests with larger acts I've seen security stop people from recording, which is a bummer.

camera's are so small nowadays you probably could tape and entire concert in HD with a camera the size of a button on your shirt

One of my bands opened for them (Veruca Salt) about a decade ago. Decent, fun band.

As far as recording concerts? Rock n roll, today, is a buyers market.

If you don't want to look stupid as far as turning a profit, its best to allow your audience everything short of your first born.

Right now in my area Musikfest is going on at the old Bethlehem steel mill

Great local and non local bands

Luckily my local TV Channels are broadcasting many of the performances

No interest whatsoever in concerts anymore. I went to a ton of them back in the day...but lost its luster to me...I'd rather go to the movies, lol.

Club and arena shows don't even bother announcing anything anymore.

I've noticed some of the classier venues, like older concert halls that still employ ushers, will police this to some degree. They mainly don't want flashes and cell lights to distract performers. Nobody cares about recording or photos anymore - it's impossible to stop at this point.

Mikey - if you love music you should go see a live show! Double You Tee Eff man! DOUBLE YOU TEE EFF!!!!
