also, not sure if this is just a local thing but my Target's bathroom is almost clean enough to eat off the floor -- no bs cleaner than a hospital bathroom
My family and I certainly prefer Target. Bathrooms are always clean in Florence Al. too. I had hoped they would expand into a Super Traget with groceries. Employees are friendly and nobody's yelling over the loudspeaker like in Walmart. Walmart always filthy and loud and crowded with Zombie like people dragging a limb. There's no comparison to me.
Target opened it's first Canadian stores to great fanfare in 2013, only to fail abysmally and go down in spectacular flames two years later after racking up $2 billion in losses. Their complete failure has been described as being "a gold standard case study in what retailers should not do when they enter a new market."
It's funny Target couldn't bring the exact same store they had in Buffalo or Port Huron to Ontario those are the ones we all go to at least in Ontario. Target Canada as just Zellers with cheaper t-shirts

This^^^
I love going to US Target but they didn't get it right up here. Empty and/or messy shelves, high prices and nowhere near the same items. It was bad.

As somebody who was "on the inside" a little with this, the problems started with the inventory management system which was totally different to their US counterpart.
Then it was the brand expectation most Canadians know Target for, they didn't bring any new names with them. So you basically got cleaned up Zellers with sparse product on the shelves.
The folks I feel most for are my colleagues who were tempted away from long positions at Canadian Tire, Shoppers Drug Mart and Chapters with Target promises. They were all fired within the first year and lost great gigs.
A person I work with closely got very badly screwed by them as they hightailed out of the country as well, they liquidated his merchandise before they paid him, then offered him pennies on their debt when he wanted it all back.
I still shop at the US locations but I wonder how many Canadians skip them now.

Yeah, I feel bad for all the people that were promised great jobs at Target only to have this happen so soon. I've also heard that the inventory system was a big problem (hence the empty shelves you saw all the time). When Walmart came into Canada 20 years ago, they took over a lot of old Woolco locations and I believe they used Woolco's inventory chain that was already in place, so it made the transition more seamless, compared to Target Canada, who thought they knew best and tried to start everything from scratch. It didn't work.
I still go to the US Target locations regularly too, I think they are great. I think I only went to a Canadian Target store one time, when they first opened. I looked around, thought to myself "Well, this store is just bullcrap" and never set foot in one again.
Zellers/Target were anchor stores in a great number of suburban/small town malls. I know retailers out there that are greatly concerned about the future of their businesses where Sears and Targets have closed shop, particularly with neighbouring Big Box set-ups that includes Walmarts just down the street.
I don't mind shopping at Target! However, I hated working at Target! It was one of the first jobs I had in high school. It had to have been the longest 3 days of my life -- then I quit! That is when I knew, I better get an education!
