Anyone watch this series?

I must admit, series one blew me away. The character of Rustin Cohle is so amazing, the things he says, his theories about life, the universe and everything. Some scenes I've rewatched a couple of times, just to let it all sink in.
It's basically a couple of cops, sitting at a table, talking about a case, but the way it is written and acted is amazing.
Most of the things Cohle says, I went "yeah, I understand that completely, you're right."
Great stuff!
If you're looking for action and gunplay, it's none of that. This is not your typical police series. It's like a grim and "deep" version of Twin Peaks. Both actors are outstanding in it, especially McConaughey.

Amazing show...I watched the entire series twice, lol.

Woodie Harrison was surprising good...but McConaughey was simply mesmerizing.

Can't wait for the upcoming next True Detective chapter with Collin Farrell and Vince Vaughn.

Watched the first episode of Season Two Sunday night. I enjoyed it, but was not mesmerized by any of the characters like I was with Matthew McConaughey's Rust Kohle. As I've stated prior, I was never a huge fan of McConaughey's before I watched TD S1, but now, I'm a MM devotee. His delivery of lines and the quiet power his acting evoked with that character were fantastic. So far, none of the characters on S2 have displayed that depth or power to me, but it's only been one episode (and we did get a really nice tease of Rachel McAdam's fine, fine behind and well as Colin Farrell threatening to---well, if you watched it, you KNOW what he threatened to do). I will definitely tune in again for the upcoming episodes...

As you guys said, season 2 still needs to convince me. Season 1 grabbed me from the first frame. As Hector said, mesmerizing. I kind of felt like a new member of the Church of Cohle(), listening to his every word. The writer of the show sure knows how to captivate an audience.
I hadn't seen something like this, where a "guy talking and smoking" is so interesting to watch. Man, I could taste that cigarette...

In the new series, none of the characters are like that. Let's give it some time.

But the whole story is not that interesting (cops and gangsters), and pretty hard to follow at times: who are all these different kinds of cops? And why are they all damaged goods?

Well, If Arnie and Danny DeVito were twins separated at birth, anything's possible...

But to get back to Detective: I think it's "quick sequel syndrome". I'm guessing the writer took his time fine-tuning the first story. He may have worked on it for years. Season 1 turns out to be a hit, and HBO asks for a sequel, asap. So the writer rushes the second story, and so far it's not that fascinating. Just look at a lot of movie sequels, they're often disappointing: either a rehash of the first, or way too different from the first.
Don't get me wrong, I'll keep watching. Though I'll still secretly hope that halfway through, a door open and Rustin Cohle walks in saying "alright, alright, alright..."
