I'm only surprised by one thing:

That no one has yet quoted Monty Python's Life of Brian: "Where's the fetus going to gestate -- are you gonna keep it in a box?"

Yes, you are quite right about the media, it's outright deceiving. She is still a woman, not a man.

Until the day the plumbing downstairs changes, she will continue being female.

I would suspect that the mentality of a transgendered person, especially someone who has had sex reassignment surgery (although not of their "bottom" organs) would mean that this is a person who has faced all of the social stigmas against their lifestyle and decided that they would defy convention and live life how they wanted to.

Having gone to that extreme (and female to male conversions are rare even within that community), when faced with his wife's inability to bear children, he made a bold decision to stop hormone therapy and bear the child himself. Any woman getting HRT will tell you that messing around with these meds isn't something done lightly.

It is not a far leap that someone willing to go to such extremes would choose to publicize their story, and control some of the spin. The way news cycles work nowadays, their story was almost certainly going to make the news. I don't think I can blame them for going public. It's not much different than celebrities that sell pictures of their babies for a million or more bucks. If my kid was going to be hounded, in pursuit of that first picture, I'd probably release some Sears Portrait Studio pix first to eliminate that feeding frenzy. Having the kid set for life wouldn't be such a bad deal either, but I digress, since I don't know if this couple has been paid a cent for their story.

I suspect their choice has more to do with shocking people a bit now to make it easier for people who might follow, or just for transgendered people in general.

My company actively ranks as one of the highest in diversity and being green. They actively publicize their accomplishments in these socially conscious areas. I suspect the efforts of the LGBT community (and this was originally publicized in The Advocate magazine before becoming national tabloid fodder) have a lot to do with companies moving in this direction. Like any strong demographic, they represent a large and often affluent customer base. If that wasn't this couple's reason for publicizing this event, it was probably The Advocate's reason for it.

When it comes down to it for me, if this is a couple that will provide their child with a stable, loving home, then I wish them all the luck in the world. Hopefully their difficulties in obtaining medical care are behind them.

If they plan on subjecting the child to a public lifetime of exposure in order to advance an agenda, I'll be as disgusted with them as any other couple that choose to exploit their children for their own purposes.

At the end of the day, I guess I don't understand why this person feels the need to bring all this attention to himself (since he is legally male that's how I'll refer to him).

Of course the media is going to eat this up because it looks like something you would see in Ripley's Believe It or Not.

He did not have to grant interviews and could have just quietly gone about his business but from what I could tell, willingly wants to be in the spotlight.

Children are going to be cruel to other children no matter what, it all boils down to how they are raised.
I know some gay couples with kids. And frankly the kids are happy, well behaved and well adjusted. In short, awesome children. They probably get teased way, way less than I did when I was a kid.

That is exactly my point with this story. I wasn't trying to stir people up. I have known transgendered people and I believe some people are in fact wired into the wrong body. I do not however believe this person is one of them. And the media is EATING up the "pregnant man" story. It was the lead story on CNN.com a few days ago. This is a person who, at the outset, said to themselves " I am truly a man, but may want to carry and deliver a child."
I would think that someone truly convinced of being trans gendered would think a little differently. I just wish some journalist had the man-parts to call this person out and ditch the "pregnant man" headlines.
Something along the lines of "Fence-sitter pregnant, difficulties ahead."
And Frankly, with all the fake memoirs popping up these days (have you heard the one about the woman saved from the holocaust because she was raised by a pack of wolves... seriously. People BELIEVED her!) I would not be surprised to see this one endind up in the "hoax" bin.

I think comments like this are why the museum has a no politics rule. I'm not interest in starting a flame war, but I do find these comments kinda offensive. Is an interesting and debatable topic, but personally I'm just gonna stick to disscussing toys.

yes kids can be cruel. They tease for all sorts of reasons and this may be one too. If that is the only reason for thinking they shouldn't do it then it's a poor one. I remember kids used to tease other kids so badly over wearing skippy's(which were cheap sneakers). I guess the parents were poor. Still Kids will do this for all sorts of things.

I think the pregnant man title is for sure incorrect and that should not be the way it's being reported on. Cross Dresser or Gender Bender maybe. I don't know for sure and think they would have been better off if they kept this private too but I think I like how megoscott addressed it best and I thank him for it.

I understand why it will bother a lot of people, but it doesn't bother me.
    What he said.

I’ve meet quite a few GLBT people through out my years of toy collecting. When you collect dolls and toys as long as I have, it’s hard not to. The majority are like everyone else, normal everyday people just trying to live their lives. Heck, most of the gay collectors I met collected stuff like SW action figures and Marvel Legends and never could understand why I collected dolls.

Anyhoo, It would have been nice if the media had not gone the Jerry Springer route when reporting this with the near constant bombardment of deceptive “Pregnant Man!” headlines all over the place.

I certainly don’t begrudge the couple to wanting to start a family. I just think ideally it would have be better had they been more private and less sensational about it, like getting patted by Oprah on her TV show. I think the whole situation is unfortunately going to generate more hate and prejudice towards an already maligned and misunderstood minority of people. What might even be more unfair about the whole thing is the person probably isn’t even actually a Transsexual.
