Honestly...and no disrespect to the OP..but....how is this even up for debate? I am in 100% agreement with Lonnie and since I was old enough to read comics I've thought that is how they were supposed to be read and the bold words were for emphasis.Comment

As a freelance writer, I can definitely tell you that the emboldening to certain words and or phrases was ( and I guess still is) meant to express inflection and emotion. I spent many a night slaving over my word processor (at the time) banging out scripts which included notes to whomever was going to be lettering it as to which words or phases required emboldening. And yes, if you choose to emphasize the wrong word or phrase, then sometimes the actual intention of the dialogue is either misconstrued or completely lost.
And I'm right up there with knight errant and Lonnie regarding today's overproduced, over rendered, over hyped and over priced comics. I, too, miss the old days of comics when they were printed on newsprint and with only four colors because, back then, the art and the story HAD to work well together to sell a book. I feel like in today's comics, even though they ARE a visual medium, the artists are given way too much slack to put down whatever they think looks cool, story not withstanding...sigpic Oh then, what's this? Big flashy lighty thing, that's what brought me here! Big flashy lighty things have got me written all over them. Not actually. But give me time. And a crayon.Comment

I think we are also looking back at older comics with the flawed lens of nostalgia. This Howard the Duck page was indeed brilliant and came from great creators.
But I recently tried to re-read the Karate Kid DC Comics series from the 70's ... I say tried cause it was unreadable. Art was horrible in both quality of line work, placement, pace, everything. The story was sub-par and laughable. I'd reread DC's Batman Court of Owls over the Karate Kid ANY DAY.
A few issues away from completing my 70s Howard run which I am sure will be a complete joy to read again.
