Some notable things I recall about being five....
-I was halfway through Kindergarten when I turned 5. My best friends were Danny, who lived across the alley from me, and Robbie, who I met at the beginning of the school year and we got along immediately. I was disappointed because they put Danny in a different class than mine, he was my main friend since we were toddlers, so that was hard to accept at first.
-Going with my class to see puppet shows and the zoo.
-I was already into KISS by age 5 (1978), and being super excited when "KISS Meets The Phantom" premiered. Afterwards, my friend Robbie convinced me that they really had "super powers", which amazed and slightly frightened me
-Watching cartoons and kids shows almost daily on WFLD Channel 32 and WSNS Channel 44 in Chicago. The old Spider-Man and Marvel Superheroes cartoons, King Kong, Rocky And Bullwinkle, Wacky Racers, Woody Woodpecker, Battle Of The Planets, The Beatles cartoon, Space Giants, Ultraman, etc.
-My Great-grandmother came over to visit from England, and we went shopping, with my mother and grandparents. She bought me a KISS record, and then we went to Sears toy department and she bought me the Six Million Dollar Man Mission Control Center. Boy I was a happy camper that day, as I still can recall all of this pretty clearly 30 years later!
- I was a big time "toy kid" (go figure), I wasn't much into sporty stuff or anything, I just loved toys....playing with them, shopping for them, talking about toys to other kids, etc. I was an only child so my parents spoiled me pretty good with lots of toys.
- One day while on the playground outside my school, we all saw a lot of smoke coming from nearby, and I came to find out later that our A&P supermarket burned down that day. It was only a few blocks away from our school and from my house, and I remember some of us kids being certain that the fire was going to kill us all, haha. It was the first time I'd seen anything like that.
-Lastly I remember my parents always having parties in our basement rec room with our big bar and stereo cranking out disco songs, haha. I loved when they'd have parties, even though I wasn't allowed to attend them downstairs, all the food and the music and the bustle of it would get me excited.
