Do you ever look back at a time in your life and think: "That was a great age." Well I did have lotsa great ages in my childhood, but today I'm picking 5.
Some of the great things about being 5 for me were:
1) Kindergarten: I went to Countee Cullen school in NYC for nursery school and kindergarten. (not a public school) My teachers were Ms. Brown, Ms. Young, Ms. Ellman for music and the director was Ms. Taylor.
2) Watching cool stuff on TV on the days I didn't have school: I didn't have to go to school every day, so I really loved watching stuff like The Monkees, F-Troop, Please Don't Eat the Daisies, Nanny & The Professor, Felix The Cat, Courageous Cat and Minute Mouse, Underdog, Bullwinkle, Romper Room, Joya's Fun School and Magic Garden. And on Saturday mornings: Lidsville and the Bugaloos!
3)Being small enough to do somersaults on the couch and not have my mom get mad at me!
4) When my older siblings would babysit me: Esp. my brother Darryl. He could be a real pain sometimes, but at least he played w/ me. We'd play w/ his electric football set, and his Hot Wheels, and we'd walk to the corner store and get candy or soda. Sometimes we'd go to the park and yell and make echoes under the tunnel on the way there. We'd sing to his tape deck he'd carry everywhere, and he always let me stay up late and watch TV. I clearly remember watching then '66 Batman Movie on TV one night.
5) My dad used to always come home w/ a surprise for me: He'd always come home halfway thru the Flintstones (which is how a 5-yr.-old tells time!) and have something: candy, gum, a new coloring book, a cap gun, Matchbox cars, a Marx Tommy gun, a Citgo SSP car.
6) Long Sunday drives w/ the whole family: remember when folks used to take drives for the heck of it? We'd go driving thru upstate NY and look at the houses, and maybe go out to eat afterwards.
7) I got my first watch: and I kept that thing til it was stolen when I was 16!
OK, OK, I'm getting lost in yesterday here, 'cos I could go on forever. What great thing do you remember about being 5?
