Now that it's Spring finally, many of us pet owners have to deal with flea prevention for our pets. In the past we used Frontline on our dogs, but last year it wasn't working as well as it had in the past. The groomer at Petsmart recommended these Bayer Seresto collars which last for 8 months. A friend of mine used them on his farm dog and said it worked fine, so I bought one for each dog.
Our 3 year old border collie mix Josie was fine with it, and has not had any problems, and the collar seems to be working fine.
However, our older dog Miles (15yrs) had an issue. After two days wearing it, we noticed that he was staggering, disoriented, and lethargic. Sleeping more than usual. The next morning he would not get off the bed, and when I tried to pick him up he yelped in pain and tried to bite me, something he had NEVER done. He actually backed into a corner and growled at me.
Luckily, I'd read a bit about the collars before purchase, and thought it might be an issue. I took the collar off, and by the end of the day he was back to normal.
So just a heads up, these collars release the agent slowly into the dogs over time, but can sometimes overload the animals system, releasing too much chemical. Early warning is the lethargy and crankiness. Later on liver & kidney damage can occur, even death.
Luckily we caught it in time, maybe a day or two more would have been too late.
