Do you rent a storage unit for your toys?

Just curious about how many folks are doing this, and what you're paying for the space..

I was a pretty active collector for about a 10 year period, give or take. I ran out of steam with it a few yrs ago other (fortunately, from a space stand point), but I still have 20 X-large containers of my collection packed in my basement.. not an ideal space, but the temp is pretty constant and doesn't get too hot or cold, so it's alright.

But I need to do some work down there this summer, and I need to move the stuff out for a few months at least. It looks like a storage unit would run me in the $40-50/month range for a small 10x10 unit, which is more than I want to pay..

I also need to go through the collection.. dump some stuff, sell some stuff, keep some stuff.. yada yada..

Anyway, just wondering who rents units.. how long you've done it, etc. I just think it's an interesting topic since most of us have too much stuff and not an unlimited amount of space to put it..

    Thanks!

If I ever get to the point where I have so much stuff I need to rent a storage unit, I'll seriously re-examine my life. At that point, it'll seem more like hoarding than collecting. I only keep what I really enjoy, so I'm constantly purging items from my collection to keep it manageable. If I have to store my stuff where I can't access and see it on a regular basis, what's the point of owning it?

When I lost my apartment a year ago, I started renting a 10'x10' storage unit and it's $122 a month. So $40-50 a month seems like a good deal to me.

I am doing some serious Spring Cleaning. Trying to set up a rule, if I can't display it, it's going. I'm sure I'll still have closets jammed with stuff, but no, never rented storage. I'd miss the stuff that's in there too much.

I only collect to display. Whatever I can no longer put on a shelf, I'll sell.
When I was moving, I had to put my stuff in storage for almost a year, and part of it got water/mold damage. I'm never letting my treasures out of my sight again after that. You just never know.
I'm actually trimming down my collection, and deciding which pieces are favorites. I'm hoping to end up with nothing but the best stuff.

Nope, it's pretty much contained in the toyroom, w/ the exception of my 18 inch doll accessories. I have storage spaces for those things thrroughout my house.

This. If I can't enjoy having something on display and it's just packed away in a box for years, I'd feel that I'd wasted money. If I start running out of room, I reassess my collecting goals and sell lesser wanted items to make room for ones I am more interested in.

In the end, you get a collection of absolute favorites, that you can look at and enjoy. If you have too many, the only other option is rotating them. Have some on display, and switch them with those in storage from time to time. At least the toys get to live part-time!

I know of a guy who has almost a hundred Hot Toys figures, crammed in boxes into his attic. He has never removed one from the box, he just has a list of what he has up there.
Kinda makes me sad for him and the toys...
