I grew up in a rural area. Fighting was kind of a pastime out there. Looking back, it was absolutely ridiculous. At the time it was just the way it was

WOW! I am amazed at how few fights many have experienced. I grew up in a tough area on the wrong side of town where even in grade school there was almost a daily fight after school. Lots of bullies. It was OK because it got much worse in Jr High. I was one of the smallest back then having started school at 4 so almost everyone was much bigger than I. I was taught to stand up for myself which didn't always go that well but it gave me a iron will. I no longer have any problems.

The most impressive thing I ever saw that helped me a lot was in 6th grade. A boy named Carmen wouldn't back down from a thug no matter how he tried to make him concede. I learned that day you can stand up through words and character and win a fight without fists.

Yes plenty of them...I lived in Brooklyn Bed-stuy/Williamsburg area. Fighting is how you survived from thugs who tried to rob you or bully you....

The funniest fight I ever had was in grade school and was by a guy who was roughly my equal. We were going at it getting no where, when his little brother jumped out of tree and tried to land on me while we were fighting but missed!!!! He did a belly flop right into the dirt making a cloud rise up. He landed with a huge thud.. He wasn't hurt but I remember saying to the guy "Do you want to stop and check on your brother?" Yeah I guess I better, he does this stuff all the time. Funny we always got along after that day. The little guy loved his brother and I thought that was cool but jumping out of tree wasn't fair in anyway.

I went through different phases. As a young kid, I was terror if somehow messed with me. My earliest memory was around second grade two of the other kids confronting me in the woods by the school and threatening me. My response was take by knapsack which as full of books, and swing it at them. I connected and we all wound up in the principal's office. There were a few other small incidents and then I switched schools in the 6th grade and it screwed me up in the head. I was picked by the this one kid and despite what happened in the past, I was terrified. This last three years as with a final "fight" coming in the 8th grade. The only winner of that fight was the other kids watching. But we actually became friends out of it after all that time. High School was relatively quiet and unfortunately due I was building up a lot of anger from not being one of the "cool kids". Towards the end of High School, it started coming out enough that the child version of me was coming back. Eventually came to a head in my 20's where there were too many too mention. Just me using stupid stuff to take out a lot of unresolved anger. Life did eventually get better and I calmed down to something normal. Didn't have the anger anymore but at also had some peace knowing I didn;t have to take anything from someone if a legitimate situation arose.

I've gotten in more fights than I care to admit. Only a few as an adult. Haven't had a scrap in about 5 years and there are still days I have the urge to drop some moron who rubs me the wrong way. I'm not a big guy but I have always had issues arguing with people, meaning I don't like to argue. If I get mad, I either just walk away or a physical confrontation was likely. As I matured, I realized the consequences of fighting and how dumb it is in this day and age.

My last scrap was 5 years ago when I was leaving the mall to find a young guy breaking into my car. I pulled him out and drilled him good, leaving him laying on the pave. His tooth actually got stuck between my knuckles and I have a nice scar now. I calmly got in my car and drove home.

The last physical fight I got in was actually with my younger sister, when I came back from college.

See, my sister is six years younger than me. As such, I was always told, "You can't hit your sister, she's younger and smaller than you."

My sister knew this and always took advantage of it growing up. She could hit me and not get in trouble, because she was "little" and if I went to defend myself I'd get in trouble.

So I was visiting from college and she was in high school. I don't remember what prompted the argument, but she shoved me against a wall. (Keep in mind, I'm 5'3" if my posture is correct and I think I weighed 120 lbs at that time... my sister was 180lbs and 5'6" at this point in time.)

I got fed up cause, dang that wall hurt, so I reached back and swung at her and punched her in her jaw and she went down hard. Of course she screams for my parents WHILE trying to get up, and I trip her and get her in headlock (trying to stick her in a crossface hold... I blame wrestling.)

My parents come in all up in arms about me abusing my "little" sister, where I just BLOW UP at them and ask them if they're blind.
SHE'S BIGGER THAN ME NOW... I'M THE LITTLE SISTER NOW!

My parents wake up from their time bubble mentality, and my sister gets grounded and I laugh, cause my parents can't ground me... I'm an "adult" now and I leave to go hang out with friends.

Half Irish here, from a long line of bar brawlers on both sides of the family. I however, was a lover, not a fighter. Fortunately though, due to generations of survival-of-the-fittest selective breeding, I seem to have an impact resistant skull. I say "fortunately" because I seem(ed) to also have a highly punchable face. Put a few drinks into someone who fancies themselves as a fighter and suddenly I start to look like a bar "speedball" punching bag.

So I've never started a fight, but have had many (many) of them. At first I wouldn't fight back - I'd let them take their best shot and just defiantly refuse to fall down (Irish head! Ha!). Eventually I realised this was a bad tactic for long-term survival of my brian cells so I started punching back. Turns out fighting is a recessive trait that I can bring out, Hulk-style.

Haven't been in a fight for 20 years now though - stopped drinking in seedy bars.

I used to get beat up a LOT in school and never fought back. I was the epitome of 98 lb weakling. After I graduated and moved out I began a very intensely physical job at a loading dock and my appetite grew insatiable. Between 18 and 21 years old I experienced a gigantic growth spurt and within 5 years I went from 115 lbs to 6' 4" 320 lb of solid muscle. People I went to school with couldn't believe it when they saw me.
Anyway...I once got into a tussle with some jerk at a bar and in my rage flipped a 700 lb pool table over. I scared a lot of people...including myself. I make a very conscious effort to restrain myself. At my size and weight, I could very easily kill someone by accident. So no, I do not fight.
