    Viewmaster + Google

View-Master works with Google Cardboard to deliver an affordable, kid-friendly immersive digital experience NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Kicking off the Toy Industry Association's Toy Fair in New York today, Mattel, Inc. (NASDAQ: MAT) unveiled a collaboration with Google that gives the iconic View-M

The View-Master was first introduced at the 1939 World’s Fair in New York, giving consumers access to spectacular 3D worlds by simply selecting a reel and looking through a device,” said Doug Wadleigh, SVP and Global Brand General Manager, Toy Box at Mattel. “By working with Google’s Cardboard platform, we are now able to take that experience even further bringing the discovery and immersive viewing experience of the View-Master to the digital age. Combining technology and innovation with this classic toy gives kids an enhanced experience allowing for play opportunities not yet imagined through new, digitally curated content.”

“We developed Google Cardboard as an open platform to inspire companies like Mattel to rethink how to deliver new user experiences through technology,” said Mike Jazayeri, Product Director for Google Cardboard. “Many of us on the Google Cardboard team grew up playing with View-Master, so we were excited to collaborate with Mattel and to see the viewer evolve and work with Google Cardboard.”

Available fall 2015, consumers can purchase the View-Master viewer and a sample experience reel for SRP $29.99. The sample reel (when paired with app and smartphone) provides a glimpse of the full View-Master experience, including a gallery of classic View-Master images, a journey into space with a tour inside a space shuttle, and a chance to explore a unique destination in 360 degrees. Additional experience reel packs will be sold separately at retail for SRP $14.99, and each pack will feature four themed experience reels – with themes such as nature, adventure destinations and science – and each experience reel will be loaded with multiple areas to explore.

I have loads of View-Masters. I have a set for school w/ more current reels like Disney Cars and Rescue Heroes, and a set for me here at home w/ the more retro titles like Laugh-in and The Mod Squad. My students who are 4 and 5 love View-Masters and are always excited when I take them out. Even when I worked w/ the school kids, they loved 'em, and would spend at least a 1/2 hour just looking at them. I really see no reason to have a toy you have to pair w/ a smart phone or an app to play with. Does everything have to have an app?I think they're fine just the way the are /were.

The design (Wall-E inspired?) is cool, but I'd be more impressed if I could load an old reel into it for a new experience, thus creating a future-past link of sweet Gilliam-esque voodoo.

I've been collecting Viewmaster reels for awhile now, I love the old tv show ones, but the travel ones are pretty cool too. I lie the older ones with people, cars, etc from the sixties. Did you know you could once have your personal photos developed onto a reel? I have an old 50s set of three reels of an unknown family mostly standing in groups in their yard. I'd like to find
Some of the doctor & dentist training reels.
Of the ones I have , my favorites are Isis, Green Hornet, and Batman tv show.

the ones with the puppet figures were always my favourites... the 2-D images turned into 3-D never had as much charm as these posed dioramas.

The Peanuts in particular were full of charm.

Loved the ViewMaster as a kid. I had one from the Batman 66 series with pictures of Julie Newmar that made me seriously reconsider at age 7 or 8 on whether I should marry Wonder Woman or Cat Woman. Decisions, decisions.

Speaking of the VM "puppet" format, the monster reels were terrific, too.

Yes! I agree with Sam... My favorite reels were the ones where they did their own thing. They were like dioramas at a wax museum.

I have read the description of the updated technology three times, and I still can't understand what the heck they're talking about.

They even did cartoon characters like Yogi Bear and the Disney characters in that format...I wonder if there's info out there anywhere detailing who sculpted them , size, etc. there's incredible attention to detail and skill there, but I've never found anything credited to anyone out there.

Viewmasters are neat. Some things dont really need a update.
