This is a true story I am about to tell. Way back at about 3 years clean(so this is 20 years ago) I was on my way to an NA meeting. It was freezing cold outside that night. I see this blonde in a red dress with her thumb out. Hmmm...So as I blew past her I decided it would be my good deed for the day to give this girl a left and I turned around. As I blew past her the other way, there were no cars coming in the other direction but her thumb was still out. absolutely desperate to save her from freezing, I turned around and pulled over to pick her up. Well, it was a store dummy in a red dress and blonde wig!

I used to occasionally hitch before I had my first car. After I bought my first car I'd pick up hitchers, but these days? I'm not that friendly anymore and there are a lot more drug addicts about.Even My Henchmen Think I'm Crazy.Comment

The only time I ever came close was back in 2009 when my brothers and I were on a backpacking trip in Moab, UT. We'd just left Arches and were heading back to our campground at Dead Horse Point, when we saw a smoking hot chick in super-short shorts with a full pack looking to hitch a ride into town. It was about 110 at the time, and she was about 5 miles or so from town, but there wasn't a good place to pull over at the time. Plus, we figured she probably wouldn't knowingly get into a car with 3 big, strapping guys, no matter how noble our intentions would have been.
But, yeah, I can't really envision a scenario in which I'd be pulling over to pick up someone. Maybe a family on a rainy night by a broken-down car. But, even then, I'd probably just offer to call a car service. Too many horror stories of hitching gone wrong. I'm sure there's plenty of folks who've had nothing but positive experiences, but it only takes that one time to erase a lifetime of good karma.Comment
