As some of you know - I work as a television editor. I was approached to help out on a cool comic book project in spring 2007 but I had to pass on it since I had committed to doing a comedy series for 6 months. Too bad - since I loved the premise - basically each episode has a running theme and will tackle several angles of that particular theme, interviewing distinguished publishers, writers, creators and artists about the topic in correlation to specific works. I also knew the comic geeks that were going to produce it and put it together as we have all worked together before on more mainstream shows - but this would have been more of a labor of love. The notable guest list reads like a who's who of the last 35 years in comics: Stan Lee, Neal Adams, Mike Mignola, Jim Starlin, Grant Morrison, Jeph Loeb, Adam Hughes, the Hernandez Bros. and Marv Wolfman to name but a few. So It sucked that I didn't get to work on it.
That is until I got a call a few weeks before X-Mas by my producer pals who really needed a packaging editor to polish the show. The other editor working with the writers and producers had put all the talking heads together but the flat-copy (the scanned comics and artwork) was exactly that > flat. A comic page over black sliding in from left another sliding in from right. Not exactly a treat for the senses. And seeing as I have a rep for being pretty nifty in making things come alive on screen and knowing the subject matter - it could make for a good fit. Perfect timing too because I had just completed the other series so I jumped at the chance to add some flavor to the show and get a second chance at participating.
The program is pretty low budget like most cable shows these days but we had a vast library of scans which I was given carte blanche to manipulate and make work. Anyways - to cut to the chase, I was called in to give the show a look and I think I nailed it. All involved were stunned at the attention to music and details and the ability to take the material and make it seem organic. I am very proud of the work I did - which is mostly on the episodes "Death", "Social Impact" and "Politics". And from what I hear - the other 6 episodes will be using the "template" I established as well.
Anyways - thought I'd toot my own horn for a sec. here and let you guys know about it. It's hosted by ex-punk frontman Hugh Dillon and will be airing on IFC Canada in the near future and there's a more than good chance it will hit IFC USA and other international markets.
PS: Look out for one segment regarding the "Death Of Captain America" in the "Death" episode which is one of my favorite edited pieces ever. Thanks for listening to Mr.Boastful!
