It's a weird thing that happens in the brain. I try to do the max bid idea too, but then when it's coming down to the wire I get competitive and try and win. I usually don't, and am happy about it after a few minutes because the auction has gone for much more than I really wanted to pay. There are times when I miss things by a dollar and I get ticked off. Most of the time I find the item later for a better price.
Just today I lost a bid on a set of six finger puppets that went for $61 total (including shipping). It was more than I wanted to pay, but I was still a little bummed. I did a new search for the same items and found a four figure lot for $17.50 BIN with free shipping! Plus they were in better condition! Boy was I glad I lost the earlier auction because what I hate even more than getting outbid at the last second is finding a better deal later on. Now I just have to track down the missing pieces for this set.
