Actually Mikey, I was listening to "white folks music" (sorry folks, I hate the way that sounds, too!), when I was still in kindergarten. I was all about David Cassidy and Rick Springfield when I was just a wee one. And yes, I listened to Rick James as well in my teen years. Thanks to my family, (and watching various TV shows like The Partridge Family, Mission: Magic, Soul Train and Bandstand),I've always had varied taste in music. High School really had very little to do w/ that.

Sherry said she went to school with mostly white kids.

If she did the reverse she might be listening to Rick James instead of Rick Springfield today.

I know highschool had a big influence on my taste in music today.

Also I think going through crap as underdogs gave most of us a lot more empathy in adulthood.

I can't really say I hated High School but I certainly had no love for it either just wanted to finish and be done with it.

I did not care for it. Back to school commercials still give me nightmares.
You are a bold and courageous person, afraid of nothing. High on a hill top near your home, there stands a dilapidated old mansion. Some say the place is haunted, but you don't believe in such myths. One dark and stormy night, a light appears in the topmost window in the tower of the old house. You decide to investigate... and you never return...

I did the smart thing and quickly made friends with several juniors and seniors. Still got picked on, but not as much. Sort of "paid it forward" by befriending a few freshman during my senior year.

The college years were truly my favorite years but I retain a few solid friends from my high school years so it all counts.

I hated high school but then I also hated middle school and elementary school. Kindergarten through second grade were okay from what I remember. Third grade and up was bad because we moved to a different town and I had to start wearing glasses, which got thicker as the years went on.

                I loved my elementary school

was in the sticks and had grades K-8

                literally 1 classroom per grade

was one step up from Little House on the Prairie school

When I went to high school I suffered from future shock

We had no high schools around my area so we had to go to the big town one.

Them town kids weren't as nice as us to say the least.

Hate to admit it but high school was ok. I had failed grade 6 so was always a little older. Owing a 1969 AMC Javelin SST with a snake decal on the hood and thrush mufflers made me feel pretty cool. I won a lot of money with that car, drag racing and the such. Being older also meant that I never had to worry about being bullied. I guess failing grade 6 was a good thing.

I loved high school in the 10th and 11th grade. Oakland High had an awesome old school late 1800's building. But sadly, it was demolished at the end of my Junior year due to being unsafe for earthquakes, so the local morons built these new awful windowless cardboard-like low ceiling building...and what I mean by windowless...half the classrooms virtually had no windows...Jesus, what a depressing environment...As a Senior, I almost transferred outta there, horrible, just horrible. The worst part about it, engineers discovered later, that the old building only needed a retrofitting, just like another nearby high school, Oakland Tech.

BTW, for the locals...I was admitted to Alameda High at first...as one of my aunts lived there...used her address (with permission of course) for residential reference. But just before, had experimented on the bus route...and this is before my car driving days, and discovered I had to be riding in three different bus routes to get there. Well, forget that...so I had my dad transfer me back to Oakland High, which only required one bus route, lol.

My demeanor during high school was that of a semi-nerd, so I hung out with the geeks in both the chess club and -sci-fi club. But my size and gym weightlifting prowess was also accepting of the jock group, as I had tried and made the football team, so I also got hang out with jocks too.

I was never bullied nor was I ever a bully to others...high school was basically a smooth ride for me.

                    Best of both worlds, lol.

The most pointless part of my life, 3 years and 9 months that were a waste of time. Senior year was OK, we only had to go from 8:30 to 12:05. Then I would get in my 71 VW and leave. My 30th reunion was about 6 weeks ago. I only found out about it last week, but I would not have gone anyway.

My high school experience was a mixed bag of strange and missed opportunities. In the summer prior to my freshman year I played knothole baseball with a group that was a lot older than me, mostly juniors. Yeah, I was by far the youngest and repsectfully picked on but nobody out hustled me and none of them out hit me either. When I got to high school later that year I was already "in" with several older kids so I had pretty smooth sailing. First day of classes they tracked me down to give my my obligatory wedgie and that was it for the entire year. I was also a fairly accomplished musician and a typical band geek. I sound like a comic character but I was truly between two worlds and really only had four or five close friends that gamed and bought comics with me.

What I failed to realize until many years later that I was much more popular that I ever knew. For three years I was the yearbook photographer, and EVERYONE wanted their picture taken. I got into all the sporting events, travelled with teams, ate with them. Everyone in the school know who I was except me as I mostly kept to myself. There were so many missed opportunities with girls and other stuff I had no idea were even possibilities. So overall it was a good experience, not great.
I almost had a psychic girlfriend but she dumped me before we met.

If anyone here believes in psychokinesis, please raise my hand.

I still remember one incident that stuck with me - and probably partially traumatized me for a long time.

My mom used to pick me up at my bus stop because I have over a mile to walk from there home.

She was in her early 60's (your typical grandmother).

When the bus came to my stop most of the kids (remember, this is high school) started spitting at her through the bus windows.

Made me so upset and mad I was at a point that I could of done anything in retaliation.

In the end I kept my cool and let it blow over ... (not an easy thing to do)

If I ever met these kids today i'd probably punch each one in the face.

I seem to have less self control today than I did back in the day --- weird

                                No ...

Sorry, it took me this long to get out of my locker after the Football team stuffed me in there.

My only saving grace were the friends I made for life when I joined the Royal Canadian Air Cadets. Basically similar to the Civil Air Patrol in the US but officially funded and supported by the Canadian Armed Forces. Couple of us cadets were in the same High School and they amounted to my only real friends.
