    Most Spooky Halloween record

    Hi guys,

On the Classic Toys board, we were discussing "Sounds to Make You Shiver" and other groovy Halloween records. The one record I have that still spooks me a little to this day is "Monster Mash-Sounds Of Terror". I know I'm an adult and sounds can't hurt you, but Kudos to Wade Denning for coming up w/ some of the most scary effects I've ever heard on a record. The reverb on "Nightmare of Lost Souls" still gets me sometimes.

Are there any Hallween records from your past that still creep you out, whether it be sounds or stories?

'Cos I believe, I believe that I do,
Yes, I can see I believe that it's magic
If your mission is magic your love will shine true."

I listened to the "Sounds to Make You Shiver" LP about 4 years ago. It had been the first time in years. Almost like opening a Pandora' Box for a kid with an over-active imagination. Here is a cool blog post showing the different things going on in the album cover.
You should know that in my house, haunted house sound effect records were not something that got dusted off once a year for Halloween. They ...

Disney is most famous for Chilling, Thrilling Sounds of the Haunted House. But their 1979 remake is surprisingly spooky. There's a creepy Jack the Ripper murder, Graverobbers getting their comeuppance from a corpse, and a spooky Frankenstein the wrecks the lab. Really well done.

Interesting. I only just got this album myself, so I really haven't examined the cover much. So was this the spookiest Halloween record from your childhood?

Most definitely, HardyGirl. I cant recall hearing too many others. One was just random sounds like it could be sounds for a school play, and any others were much lighter in tone.

Monster Mash - Sounds Of Terror gets my vote. I couldn't listen to "Nightmare of Lost Souls" for the longest time after I first heard it when I was 9 or 10. Years later, it became one of my favorite tracks.

This one is OK, I guess. But I like the original album w/ Laura Oshler narrating better. The best track is the Mad Scientist Laboratory.

The original is more iconic, yes. But there are some real chills to be heard on the remake.

I didn't really have any "Spooky Records", despite my collection of Power Records and the like. I guess I was too much of a weenie as a young kid. The first one I had was a tape, and I think it came from Hallmark. It had the normal horror tropes on it, despite it coming from that rather sanitized store.

I just got a repro CD of the old Disney Haunted Mansion book and album. It's not a horror sounds album, per se, because it follows teenagers (one being Ron Howard) touring the mansion against their will. But it does have some nice creepy sounds.

Hmmm...I'd like to hear that one. Where did you get it, Chris?

Story and song from the Haunted Mansion! My absolute fav Halloween album. Nothing sets the Halloween mood like that old LP. Love it.
You are a bold and courageous person, afraid of nothing. High on a hill top near your home, there stands a dilapidated old mansion. Some say the place is haunted, but you don't believe in such myths. One dark and stormy night, a light appears in the topmost window in the tower of the old house. You decide to investigate... and you never return...

^Yes! I ate his cereal this morning, and listened to him on the way to work.

It's on Amazon, I think. Cindy just gifted it to me out of nowhere.

I didn't really have any of the Halloween sounds/stories records when I was a kid. However I did have one record that was a cardboard cut-out from a box of cereal, probably circa 1978 or so. I don't recall the name or much about it really, but it freaked me out!

I had the "Spooky Stories: The Legend of Sleepy Hollow" record from a Honeycomb box when I was a kid and loved it.
