remembering the video arcades of the 80s and the old classic games

anyone remember when you had to go to a special place to play a pc game?

theyre a thing of the past now arent they- i had to explain what a cassette tape was to my daughter i felt like i was telling her we used to live in caves.

befor the internet when you had to buy toyshop to find toys and call people or in my case waste a fortune on international reply coupons that sellers never used to reply to you.##

anyway,,, who remembers GORF- GALAXIANS-BOOT HILL-DEFENDER-

ah those were the days, gorf in particular incorporated several other games into it as the various levels.

I've noticed that the old games are making a comeback. The Museum of Play in Rochester NY has a bunch of the old games (& pinball) that patrons can play. There's also a bar in Columbus (the 16 Bit Arcade, I think) and a store front in St Louis with old games. I played some Tempest in Rochester this summer and had a blast.

I love classic video games. Stuff like Pac-Man and Atari are just as much of part of my childhood as other classic toys like Mego and Star Wars. The first video game I played was Space Invaders at a laundry mat. Had to stand on an old milk crate to reach the controls.

      A couple of my favs

      Q-bert
      Centipede
      Ms Pac-Man
      Galaga
Star Wars arcade by Atari- I put SO many quarters into that thing.

You are a bold and courageous person, afraid of nothing. High on a hill top near your home, there stands a dilapidated old mansion. Some say the place is haunted, but you don't believe in such myths. One dark and stormy night, a light appears in the topmost window in the tower of the old house. You decide to investigate... and you never return...

Anyone who has nostalgia for old games should read Ready Player One by Ernest Kline. I'm not a huge gaming fan, but the book waxes nostalgia and brings it all back nicely.

Too many to even list, I think my friends and I played practically every day in the early and mid '80s. There were a couple pizza shops on the walk home from our middle school, each had a few games. Not to mention the local mall arcade and restaurants like the Ground Round that also had great games.

But here's one that's always been a personal fave, mostly cuz I got really good at it.

Well, I still have my Atari 2600, (though I haven't played with it in a long time), and I have 180 games for it, and an additional 40 games for my Intellivsion II, (also not played with). I remember when I lived w/ my dad and every Sunday was Bowling Day. We'd go out and go bowling but we also loved to hit the arcade. A favorite game was Donkey Kong when it first came out. But I always loved Space Invaders.

That was a great game and the arcade cabinet was very cool with its light up joystick.

Hmmm...some of my favorites were Excite Bike (there was a table top version at a local pizza joint), Rolling Thunder, Operation: Wolf, the original TMNT game, the original X-Men game, and my personal favorite arcade game of all time: Superman. Man, I'd LOVE to have that in a man cave!

When I was in college there was a great arcade in Morgantown called Space Port. I used to waste a lot of quarters there playing Galaga, Donkey Kong, Dig Dug, Asteroids, PacMan ...
There was a cool tabletop trackball Football game that I loved, too. Kids today, with their HD Madden NFL games, would laugh at that!

I liked Ms. Pac-Man and Donkey Kong. I remember that Karate Champ was fun to play against someone else.

That game was awesome! Played the heck out of the NES version too.

and my personal favorite arcade game of all time: Superman.
I had never played that. Looked it up on youtube. Music was good. Classic John Williams theme. The graphics looked nice for time. Superman looked great. But no actual DC super villains in the game. That was kinda odd.

^I remembered Brainiac being in it, but I may be wrong. I liked when you had two players, one essentially looked like the original Superman-Red. I think the Williams theme going the whole time you played was one reason I loved it.

And yes, that TMNT game was one of the better arcade to NES translations.
