Having Your Cake, a small pet peeve of mine

I was just reading on another forum some one using the phrase...."You can't have your cake and eat it too"......Wrong!!!! I have a small pet peeve in how so many people get this saying wrong.

If my cake is in my Hand and it's mine why can't i eat it?

The correct saying is actually " You can't eat your cake and have it too"
Once I eat my cake it's gone. I cannot have it......meaning once it's gone it's gone.

I hear people blow this one a lot:

"Money is the Root of All Evil"

I believe it's actually,

"The Love of Money is the Root of All Evil"

I actually heard a guy say, " It's a mute point."
As in "It's a moot point."

Someone asked me, "I need you to do me a favorite." Meaning favor. I thought she mis-spoke but she said it again later, "I need another favorite."

Also 'Ir-regardless', which is a word, but it shouldn't be.

The phrase "I could care less" is wrong and a pet peeve.

The correct phrase is "I could not care less".

If you say "I could care less" then you are saying there are different levels of caring about something. And while that may be true, people use it incorrectly when put in the context of "there is nothing less that I care about". I could care less about Britney Spears. What does that mean? You care for her but it's possible that your caring for her could be less than what it is.

"I could not care less" correctly implies that there is nothing beyond something. Of all the things I don't care about in the world, Britney Spears is the one I don't care about the most. I could not care less about Britney Spears. Nothing comes after Britney Spears.

(I don't truly feel that way about Britney...I'm sure she's actually a well adjusted person.)

For some reason it just irks me when people say "pacific" when they mean "specific". One woman at work seems to say "pacifically" in every sentence.

Pacifically/Pacific, and not as in the Ocean- I head several people say this when they mean specifically/specific.

People who use "literally" when they really mean "figuratively."

I intentionally say pacific at times because I know it drives some people crazy. But I do know the actual difference.

Ever since the movie ELF, I have heard lots of folks using "gi-normous" as a word. I don't even know how to spell that let alone accept it into the dictionary.

Apparently, I've been misusing the term for years. Oh well.

I have always used the "cake thing" as such---

If someone is doing something that I think is over-ambitious---or greedy--
-or in some other way "too far reaching" for what I think is reasonable, then
I'll use the phrase in a way that states that.

"Hey, man you can't have your cake and eat it too."
"You want your cake and to it too?"
Etc.

Meaning that maybe they should just be satisfied withg HAVING the cake
and not EATING it on top of that (kinda akin to "biting off more than you
can chew")

Really people should use the language how it suits them---as annoying as it
can be to others----whats most important is to be able to communicate your
ideas efficiently without compromising your comfort-level trying to please everyone.

In other words--- if people are getting by comfortably with a strange way
of communicatiing---its better than getting by uncomfortably communicating
in a more proper way.

You'll bust your brain trying to be the perfect communicator to every person.

To say something is "very unique". You can't have degrees of uniqueness because it means "one of a kind"
