Strange picture on Mars

It was altered after first posted. I have no idea why. It was just kind of strange...

Assuming that's an authentic pic from Mars - because it's a flat 2D black square my guess is that it's digital static or missing information.

It was a picture that nasa posted with a big black section that later vanished. These pictures are digital from the beginning, so something was altered in the picture. I have no clue what was altered, but it is a fact that nasa altered the picture after it was first posted.
