I've got 8 and 10 year old boys and they love toys. Skylanders and Disney Infinity show how toys can be combined with video games and be a huge success.

Do kids of today even play with action figures anymore?

Whenever I wander the flea markets, I always have to wait for some over-eager kids to get their hands out of the bin of loose actions figures so I can get my chance at it. I don't know what these kids are doing with those action figures, but each has their own specific search criteria.
I seriously doubt these kids are trying to find loose and used collectible figures from the 70s and 80s to resell on eBay, but I see them grabbing up Batmen, Mutant Turtles, Spidermen and specific X-Men. If they are only collecting them to enhance their bedroom displays, or using them as figures in very odd school dioramas -- I do not know -- but I presume that a lot of those loose figures are getting played with.Comment

My nephews are into Legos, but there's one that was heavily into the 3 3/4" GI Joes (still might be)...
I'd guess that quite a few kids still play with/collect action figures... Yes, there is the adult collectors market, but that really seems like it's a niche market... I'd guess the majority of figures/toys are bought by (or for) kids...Comment

Even back in the 70's it didn't seem like most kids played with action figures. I was the only kid I knew who had any mego figures, or GI Joe. some of the kids I played with would play with my figures with me, but they didn't have any, or only had one or two and they usually were destroyed. I had one cousin who had 12" GI Joes, and another cousin who had one Gi Joe and one Mego Kirk figure. Always felt like the odd man out until I found other adult collectors later on.Comment
