What will they do when the kids can't cope with the stress? At least summer vacation give them time to relax and unwind.

the other thing it would cause havoc for is vacation schedules. I mean those of us with kids generally go on vacation in the summer months where you have 2 months of time to choose from. if it is knocked down to only 2 weeks in say July and then maybe two weeks in august, it would severely limit the time we could go on vacation, and everyone at work would want the same time off, which can't happen for obvious reasonsComment

Yep, what he said. And what about all the day camps and summer camps? You'd put them outta work, b/c most of them hire college kids for the summer to be counselors. They couldn't just take 2 weeks off 4 times a year to work in a camp.
they have been talking about it here in NY as well. thing is, the schools do not have air conditioning(most anyway) and it would be a huge expense to retrofit it for every school. the idea behind it is so that the kids don't lose some of what they have been taught. there is a theory that by having 2 months off, the children forget too much from the prior year. I am sure there is some truth to that, but we all grew up, graduated from school became professional people and most if not all of us got good jobs/careers. so did our parents. why they think this has to be changed now I cannot understand. I am against it. children need a break from school. 2 weeks is not near enough. hell we all know that being adults in the workforce and stuck with 2 weeks vacation. I only start to really relax the middle of the second week and then I have to go back to work.
enough with all this crap, let kids be kids and enjoy their summer offLast edited by HardyGirl; Aug 21, '14, 8:45 AM."Do you believe, you believe in magic?

Preach on brother Duncan. All those experiences are part of a well-rounded education IMO. And as the kids age, summer camps turn to summer jobs.Comment

this is all really just another example of the federal government sticking their noses in where it doesn't belong and trying to play mommy and daddy because America is too far behind the rest of the world, educationally. we are seeing the same nonsense with the common core, which parents don't want, students don't want and teachers don't want. one size fits all approaches do not work. kids area all different and have different talents and abilities. we have had a lot of pushback locally against common core learning, sometimes confrontational, and I suspect the same will happen if they try to go to year round schoolingComment

Yeah, we put 'em in sailing camp over at the Hoover for 2 weeks, and they're both thinking long-term about being counselors. The boy will be a CIT at one of the Columbus camps next summer.Comment
