    Stuff Canadians Say ...

Just a little video primer for you folks in the US. The not so funny part of this is that you only have to drive 10 minutes from my house to ACTUALLY hear someone talk like this ...

That's not actually too far off from some people I've met, but I don't come across it often. At least he didn't say "a-boot" for about - which I've never actually heard in my entire life.

He didn't do enough question speak, half my inlaws say sentences like "I went down to crappy tire?"

I worked with the "Howse" and "Abowt" guy. We grew up like 5 km away from each other but he had a total drawl, it was weird.

My cousins in Florida always made fun of my sister and me, saying "There's a mowse abowt the howse!" Dammit, we don't talk like that! (I think?)

The only thing that I know for sure is that we do say "Eh?" At least I do. I never really thought about it, but I actually caught myself doing it one time
and realized that I do it a lot. I never even noticed until that time, now I do. I guess I'm slow, eh?

I once sat with Neal Adams while he drew a convention sketch for me. He asked if it was alright to sign a few books to keep things moving.

During the course of my drawing and signing books for others Neal leaned over and said to me that he ALWAYS gets a kick at listening to Canadians. Specifically how we say "eh". I got a tad defensive and told him we don't really. He laughed and said "Bulls@#t. You watch. I'll count the Eh's of the next person that comes for an autograph."

So the next fellow comes along and under the table Neal is sticking up one finger each time the guy sez "Eh". Wouldn't you know it but in a two minute conversation Neal ran out of fingers.

I guess we just don't notice ourselves doing it, eh?

I think it's too subtle for us to actually "hear" when talking to each other, but it seems to really stand out to folks from the Southern US. At a recent con in Detroit, a young lady from Indiana was highly amused by my "accent" and that of the other Canadians present ("aboot" and Eh?)... meanwhile the folks from Detroit are probably in close enough proximity to Canada that it doesn't register with them either?

I mean what does it sound like to folks hailing from the South when us Northerners try and affect a "Souther accent"? Probably overly exagerated and "off".

Do our friends at Mego meet from below the Ice Tea line "hear" our accents? does it get thicker when we drink?

I'll admit I say "Give'r" but only in a slightly sarcastic fake enthusiasm sorta way.
