Couldn't do it then, sure as heck can't do it now either.
Walking proudly with you, my gym- challenged brother!

I'm walking w/ the both of you. I tried it once, couldn't do it, and happily excepted an "F" the following year in Jr. Hi gym class. In high school I wised up and took Dance for my P.E. course. Scored an "A" every year!

I have a recollection of reaching the top at least once. But that is overshadowed by the trauma of always having to swim naked in high school gym class --something was seriously messed up with that policy.

Never understood the logic in the rope climb?
I mean I understand building up your core an exercise but most school courses kind of prepare you to function in the world.
Reading, writing, spelling, math and in gym running, dancing, sports but rope climbing?
I've never come across an instance in my daily life where this has ever been needed...lol
I've swung on ropes to land in a lake but never needed to climb the rope in a building to touch the roof or ring a bell?
It's an odd exercise to say the least.
“When you say “It’s hard”, it actually means “I’m not strong enough to fight for it”. Stop saying its hard. Think positive!”

I loved climbing the rope. I'd get in trouble for doing it when I wasn't supposed to. No leg help, just arms. All the way up, all the way down. I used to climb up the light poles in the parking lot after school and also get in trouble. I liked the peg board climbing thing, too. And trees...

Add me to the list that couldn't climb that dumb rope. Nor could I do a chin-up.

I am also not a rope climber, Lonnie you're the guy who always proved it could be done so the coach would be upset with the rest of us.

I managed it only one time and to this day, I don't know how I did it. I guess it's a mental thing. I have a fear of heights. That might have played a role.

I was hopeless in gym, it was the only class I failed.
Swimming class was even worse. When the teacher saw I was scared of the water, she threw me in at the deep end. They had to drag me from the bottom of the pool, I was then terrified instead of just plain scared. I didn't learn to swim until two years (!) ago....

My 7th grade gym teacher made me try in front of the entire class sitting silently cross legged while I failed mercilessly. He offered me no guidance, like I should have just known how. He then made another kid show me how it's done, it was one of the many pieces of fabric in the abuse quilt this guy made me that year.

Last year, I was having a beer with a good friend and I discovered he had the same gym teacher growing up at a different school. My friend's a pretty balanced person but he actually tracked him down and semi jokingly suggested that we pay him a parking lot visit at his work. I got the feeling he'd given this a lot of thought.

Never had a problem doing it. During high school, for circuit training in our mandatory gym class (even if you played a varsity sport), it was required to be able to do it during each of the 3 laps, no legs and then ring the bell at the top, about 20-25 feet up. Man, I miss being in shape, but I am still haunted by the sounds of those bells.

My dad told me about his days in high school when they had to do it in full football gear. I guess that's what happens when you have a 3-star marine general in charge of football and PE. Of course, the shoulder pads started pinching everyone's necks and cutting off air flow the further up they climbed and that practice was quickly disbanded.

Now that I think about it I don't think the girls even had to try at my school ... I think while us boys were doing the rope the girls were doing something else.

Same with chin-ups (which I never could do any either)

                              Mikey,

We didn't have to climb ropes when I went to school. Instead we had the horror that is the Canada Fitness Award Program.

Consisting of the 50 yard run, the 300 yard run, flexed arm hangs, the shuttle run, speed situps, and the standing long jump. Based on your performance you were granted a Bronze patch, Silver, Gold or the Award of Excellence, unless you were a real weakling which granted you the mightily embarrassing Participation Pin.

Although I did VERY well in the 300 yard run never scoring less than Excellence level all the other events had my puny pre-serium Steve Rogers body beat.

Flex arm hang? With my tooth pick arms? HA!

Situps? Shuttle run? They mocked me.

I think the best I ever did overall was one Bronze patch and a slew of bully inducing Participation Pins.

                              - Marty
