I'm Catholic and we're supposed to fast today.

I really can't do it because I just joined an Indoor Soccer team and we have a game tonight. I couldn't imagine trying to play and not eating anything the entire day.

So, I decided to have small meals and drink only water instead of the normal cup of coffee plus the few diet sodas I have throughout the day. I figured I'm at least doing something to try to observe it and I should be hydrated by game time.

I was brought up Roman Catholic Polish/American and we just don't eat meat today.

Fish is ok, just no meat.

So today, it's fish, bread and sweets

What about whale? Is that okay to eat? It's an animal that lives in the sea and swims like a fishy, but it's a mammal, like a cow or a chicken.

I'm totally confused. Somebody set me straight quick - I've got a plate of humpback sitting here that I'll have to stick back in the fridge until tomorrow..

I think fasting is only necessary from noon until 3pm (the time Christ suffered on the cross). I'm a terrible Catholic, though, so I wouldn't peg your salvation on anything I have to say.

Actually it's all day according to our church and said if there was a medical condition or some other reason, you should eat very small meals.

As far as I know, it isn't considered a sin or anything to not fast or eat meat on Friday if your Catholic. It's just one of those strange traditions that have been passed down through the ages. They say that fasting is supposed to make you more spiritual...it just makes me hungry.

Whale would be considered fish....if it comes from the water, you can eat it (shrimp, crabs, whatever). You basically are not supposed to eat beef, pork, poultry, lamb, but eggs are ok (don't ask me why an egg is ok but chicken is not, I didn't write the rules).

I do remember a few years ago, St. Patrick's day fell on a Friday during Lent and the pope allowed meat to be eaten. You just can't expect to celebrate St. Patrick's day without your cornbeef and hash.

I presume when you say fish, you mean any kind of seafood right? Your allowed to eat lobster, shrimp, etc...

I do know some Catholic churches have different observances so maybe the fasting isn't everywhere.

My wife's grandmother is Polish and when she died a year ago, the funeral was at a Catholic Church in a Polish section of Baltimore. I walked in and right in the narthex was a statue of Pope John Paul II (the first Polish pope). I didn't think Catholic Churches were allowed to have statues of people that were not canonized saints of the Church but apparently this one was following its own rules.

I'm not a good Catholic now but I grew-up in a traditional Roman Catholic family. I remember as a kid we couldn't play, listen to music or make too much noise on Good Friday and Holy Saturday.
