Generation Grit: An action figure line that parallels American Girl's Historical line

    Hey guys,

For those of you who have daughters, you may know about American Girl dolls. I saw this kickstarter link on a doll blog I read, and was intrigued by the concept. This first figure is a lot of AG's Molly McIntyre, in that it takes place during the second world war, and his young Brittish cousin comes to live w/ him to escape the London bombings. It's geared to boys w/ smugglers, spies and cyphers.

    What do you think?

"Do you believe, you believe in magic?
'Cos I believe, I believe that I do,
Yes, I can see I believe that it's magic
If your mission is magic your love will shine true."

That's pretty cool... I like the WW2 era setting and the "Boy's Own" adventure kind of vibe it has. Neat!

As a military reenactor, this intrigues me. I know of many adult collectors of 1:6 scale figures who would be all over this -- I think they slightly missed the mark intending kids as the end consumer. While the concept is entirely valid, the REAL market is the deep-pocket collectors of 1:6 scale historically accurate figures.

Sad to see that with only two days to go, they have just over half of the needed funding. Nonetheless, I might throw some funds their way later tonight -- I would love to see this happen.

I wonder if scale is the issue why this might not get off the ground?

I know most of us are vested in the 8" line
and seems 12" is the wave of the future with Hot toys and such.

a simple size change might really help this project out.

A friend sent me a link to this Kickstarter last week. Honestly, I was unimpressed from a business concept standpoint. The American Girl line was designed as a counter/niche to a marketplace filled with boy-centric action figure lines. AG positions themselves well against Barbie, too by offering more diversity and even some "educational" material. American Girl is a great concept that filled a couple of voids.

I think this line is positioning itself to a market that's not really there. Over generalizing a bit... boys like to play in the dirt with their action figures (or at least we used to). Plus, there is a huge selection already out there.

I like the packaging and accessories.
          Fresh, not from concentrate.

            It is 1/6th scale.

Yup, exactly. You summed up my thoughts much more articulately than I could have said it.

Yeah, it's not really a bad idea but I think it's going to have a lot of trouble carving out a spot in the highly competitive boys action figure market. They have, honestly, kind of a bland looking doll which will be competing with the likes of Transformers, Ninja Turtles and Superheroes.

American Girl and previously Magic Attic went after a market that wasn't really being catered to at the time. They are not fashion dolls or baby dolls. They filled a void in girls toys that no one else was doing at the time.
You are a bold and courageous person, afraid of nothing. High on a hill top near your home, there stands a dilapidated old mansion. Some say the place is haunted, but you don't believe in such myths. One dark and stormy night, a light appears in the topmost window in the tower of the old house. You decide to investigate... and you never return...
