    Speaking of Oscars

Does anyone else besides me think that Heath Ledger will probably win a posthumously awarded Best Supporting Actor award for Dark Knight?

From the trailers, his portrayal looks brilliant but I also know that best actor awards generally do not go to this genre of movie.

Without seeing the movie or the competition that he will be up against, I'm wondering if there are any thoughts out there as to whether or not 1)he'll get nominated 2)he'll win and 3)if he does win, it will be well deserved or more of a token award that wouldn't have been won if he were alive.

I realize it's hard to say since none of us have seen the movie but with the way it seems Hollywood works, he seems to me like he will win regardless of any other performances.

Nope. I don't think they will award him for Dark Knight. As good an actor as he is it's still a Superhero film and they won't do it. They still consider these types of films not that important because of where the material comes from-comic books. The sweep by LOTR a few years ago was a fluke and due more to the respect and faithfulness of the films to JRR Tolkien's books. Tho they are recent books it is likely they will go on to become English Literature in centuroes to come. Batman and the Joker will always be iconic characters but will likely never attain the level of respect literature does. You won't see people get awards for playing comic book characters any time soon I think.

I doubt it,but I would really hope he did if it's as good as he looks on the previews

Like John said, they have a bias towards comic book character driven roles, so I highly doubt it...but it would be so cool if they did.

They are Bias towards Comicbook Movies.
However with Hollywood Running outta Ideas,.. & Turning to more & more Comicbook Movies & story driven scripts.. it's only a Matter of time.

Well, it looks like there is some buzz about this subject already.

I've heard it so many times and in so many places, if he doesn't get a nod, THAT will make more news than who did get nominated. Everyone from the cast to critics is saying he should be, and probably will be nominated.

I'm glad to hear Ledger was that good in the role, but Bale is no slouch. Playing Batman right is a complex gig, and he does it with flying colors.

Whoever wins. . .don't they need a team of PR folk to be out there with freebies and give aways to bribe. . . um. . .sorry. . . I mean Persuade those that vote???

You do hear a lot of this. But is it true, or only to some extent. . .and how much confidence do you really have in the integrity of those that make the decisions?

I honestly don't think freebies and bribes take place. The only thing I heard that the people making the decision get is a dvd advance copy to watch at home.

There are a lot of weathly people that make up the academy from different areas of the entertainment industry and just can't contemplate it happening.

For the most part, I think the awards have been pretty dead on. Sometimes, the awards go to some pictures that I don't particularly care for but after viewing them, I can see why they are Oscarworthy.

If they didn't give an award for Jack Nickolsons performance in Batman, they surely aren't going to give Heath one. As sad as that may be.

Not to be a contrarian, but it definitely happens. The studios have actual teams of people who work to try and influence the people who vote on the Oscars. They begin with ads in the trade magazines like Variety and even Television Weekly. People get invited to "screening parties" where they are treated like VIPs. Heck, I only work in local TV, but our movie critic gets phone calls, etc.

On the Ledger question, I think they'll most likely give him a posthumous nomination, but winning will depend on a lot of other factors.

I'll probably get stoned for saying this, but I was nevery really that impressed with Jack's preformance as the Joker.

To me, Jack wasn't playing the Joker, Jack was playing Jack, or at least playing to the charicture what we all think the 'wild-n-crazy' Jack is.

I think Heath's preformance, at least from what I've seen, will blow Jack's away, but I don't think he'll get an Oscar for it.

I think it may happen. I have heard posthumous Oscar mentioned in several pieces by serious film critics. Let's not forget that at it's heart the modern Oscars are a marketing device to propel dvd rentals and sales.
