As we are deep into the Graduation time of year , it seems that its an everyday arrival of another announcement and the silent solicitation of a charitable gift. We have had a couple year reprieve from them and 25 was the going rate back then. Has the suggested amount gone up ?

We operate on a tiered scale. Random, barely connected invite is $25. Real friends' kids get $50; family is $100. Thank God we don't have a huge family. -
All have been for High School except 2. I was thinking the collage gifts would be atleast 50 since they have accumulated the debt that goes with the hard work.Comment

My oldest daughter just graduated college Sunday and just by not hitting the toy store or the drive thru the last 3 months I was able to give her 300 without affecting any of the bills I had to pay, wish it could have been more College graduation is a big deal (proud moment for me too)Comment

Steve was pretty solid. I added a lower tier of $10 for non regular friends. There were times when my kids were hitting 4 or 5 parties on a weekend. For kids I had met once or twice. $50 a week over the course of 5 or 6 weeks adds up quick and puts a major dent in the monthly budgets. That was when I stopped being glad they were popular and wished they were loners. I did get over that. Their closest friends actually planned their parties so none would overlap. We were celebrating graduation into July. It's not a doll it's an action figure.Comment

I think a Mego Spiderman would be the perfect gift, I would have loved that at my graduation...
To be honest, it all depends on how close you are to the people involved.
My wife and I got tired of people that don't invite you to anything, for anything fun, but do always send you a card when they've had a baby or something so they can extract a gift from you (and they always add an acount number so you can conveniently send money).
We've also done away with the expensive Christmas gifts to family members. It got to the point where $125 per gift was expected, so we ended up paying almost $1,000 per Christmas. After a lot of discussion, we decided (just my wife and I) to no longer give or expect gifts, as cheaper gifts were not an option for people like my sister.
Times are too expensive, we just can't afford that anymore....
