    Commercials....at the Movies

What ever happened to going to the movies and seeing just previews before the movie starts? When I went to Horton Hears A Who yesterday there were at least 10 commercials and only 2 previews. How many kids out there really think "you know, I really need to go buy a Nissan" after the film is over? (and before somebody states the obvious, yes I know the commercial is actually aimed at the parents ). I can understand Coca-Cola advertising because you're sitting there, thinking maybe I should go get a coke at the snack bar. Unless they are selling Nissan's in the theater lobby it makes no sense. I'll have a large popcorn, a diet coke and a Nissan please!

It's only a matter of time before they start advertising during the movie, say after every 20 minutes.

Yeah If I wanted to watch commercials I'd stay home and watch TV. Not only that but last time I went they got butter all over my Nissan.

Heck prices are getting so high at the snack bar I don't think I'd bat an eye seeing. Lg Popcorn- $15. Sm used car $8,000 SUV $25,000

As long as we are *****ing I hate when they show that "Turn off your cel phone" announcement 5 times and there is always some jerk who has it ring in the middle of the movie
Lo there do I see my Father.
Lo there do I see my Mother and my Sisters and my Brothers.
Lo there do I see the line of my people back to the begining.
        Lo they do call me.
They bid me take my place among them.

Product placement doesn't bother me because it's subtle enough and doesn't generally distract from the movie. I do love the scene in "Wayne's World" where they deliberately poke fun at that issue.

So... you've never seen "Top Gun" then?

I think the term for this sort of thing is "guerilla marketing;" wherein you sneak as many ads for as many things as possible into as much space as you can. Product placement, ads in weird (and usually irritating) places... anything to get you to see more.

Same thing as all them sites where you have to sit through an ad before viewing their content. (Wasn't it Futurama where they'd beam ads into your dreams while you slept?)

Yeah I've seen Top Gun many times. But I look at it a different way, product placement adds a certain realism to a movie. Because let's face it we have thousands of products in our homes, cars, etc. etc. Just looking here on my desk I have about 15-20 different "name brand" things alone just strewn about it.

I tend to notice the "generic" items in movies and tv shows more often(i.e "Rippled Potato Chips" that look similar in design to "Ruffles".) To me that's more of a distraction because it just looks odd. If Tom Cruise and Anthony Edwards were sitting around drinking "Yummy Beer" rather than Miller or Michelob (or whatever it was) in Top Gun it would stand out more.

I still laugh whenever I see the "Smoking Man" on the X-Files with his "Morley" cigarettes that look exactly like the Marlboro design.

Not to mention the constant turn cell phones off reminders. Are people that idiotic? We went to the Simpsons movie, first movie I've seen in theatres since the Incredibles, and the commercials and psa's have gotten at least twice as bad in that 2 year span. No wonder we don't go anymore.

                      >product placement adds a certain realism to a movie.

Sometimes. maybe. "Top Gun" is my worst case scenario for this though. I think almost every scene has a "Pepsi" symbol in it somewhere. When the two main characters are sitting in the lounge talking there's either a bunch of Pepsi machines in there, or one that moves around like they did on macross.... 'cos every shot, regardless of angle or who's talking has one in the background. Or when the General storms out of the office, tips the tray of a guy walking by.... a tray with a Pepsi symbol on it that's held up to the camera as it falls.... (Can't remember brand-name trays on any base I've eaten at....)

                      >I tend to notice the "generic" items in movies and tv shows more often(i.e "Rippled Potato Chips" that look similar in design to "Ruffles".) To me that's more of a distraction because it just looks odd.

...although I do apprecate when they DO something with the no-name brands; like make up some weird product. (Not so much of that nay more though....)

                      >Just looking here on my desk I have about 15-20 different "name brand" things alone just strewn about it.

True; but you don't have to LIKE it. Product placement was part of a process. They'll keep adding ads until folks get really fed up with it. (Which they won't. People climatize really fast.)

commercials are just one more reason why I don't take my family to Carmike Cinemas in our area. As seen in the Travelling Mego Card thread, my landmark photo featured The Avon Theater...he's our hometown guy and he refuses to show that crap. He STILL shows vintage cartoons! Yup, Bugs Bunny, Road Runner, Tweedy..the works.
