"Searching for Sugar Man" Director RIP

There have been a lot of these death notice posts on the forum lately, and they're all tragic, but this one really got to me, because this guy is so young, but also because I could not wait to see what he came up with next - his movie genuinely moved me.

Malik Bendjelloul was found dead at 36 years old - no cause of death at this time. He made one movie "Searching for Sugar Man" (released in 2012) and won an Oscar for it. He famously shot parts of it with his iPhone.

If you haven't seen "Searching for Sugar Man" PLEASE do. I can't recommend this movie highly enough. Especially if you love classic rock music and ESPECIALLY if you know nothing about the movie.

This was a great documentry, but I actually found out later that within the whole search, where was this man etc, he had been giving concerts in the mean while, so this kinda killed the film for me.

I really don't want to spoil the content of the movie - because I knew nothing when I saw it and that made it more powerful. I have read other people complaining about that online - and no offense intended - but that complaint honestly makes no sense to me. The movie follows people who don't know what happened and the truth unravels to them as it unravels to us - which is what makes it such a powerful movie. I think if you don't want your emotions played with then you don't want to watch a movie - what you want a news report.

Ugh - apparently he suffered depression and the word is that this was suicide. Terrible.

Love this doc. If you can find Cold Facts or the Sugar man soundtrack its worth a listen. Rodriguez did know about his cult following in Australia so in that sense the film was misleading but never let the truth get in the way of a good story. Sixto was a hidden gem stateside and the film was very well made.
Sorry to hear about the directors passing.
