Wow yeah, the Dixie Square Mall in Harvey, IL. I went there a few times when I was very young. I remember my dad telling me about them filming Blues Brothers there, and then seeing it later and just freaking out about how much they trashed it, haha. (Side note-- I currently live just a few blocks away from where the Blues Brothers did the famous bridge jumping scene at the beginning of the film!)

I remember getting my first job at a Tuxedo store in Irondequoit Mall in Rochester New York. It opened in 1990 and was a thing of beauty. Two floors, natural lighting... everything. Within a dozen years, it was gone. So sad.

I grew up going to the first mall pictured in that article (Rolling Acres). In my late teens/early 20s my brother and I went there almost every weekend.

When I was a kid growing up in NYC, I never even heard the word "mall". We had corner stores, discount stores, grocery stores and department stores. When I visited my cousins in So. Cal. in 1977, we went to the Laguna Hills mall, and I was in awe! All those stores under one roof! Here in Oakland, we had the M/B (MacArthur Broadway) mall. It wasn't really big like those malls pictured, just one story w/ a lot of shops and restaurants. It's closed now, b/c Kaiser Permanente tore it down and took over that spot to expand their hospital.

For too many years the mall owners dictated insane terms to stores, when they could open, close, location changes etc. when my wife & I opened our collectible a store, we asked about a mall space, the rent was something like $2400 a month plus utilities for the smallest space, and the only location was off one of those empty side wings near the end. There were other open spaces, but those were reserved for " seasonal" stores, which means they sit empty until Christmas or a car show. We eventually opened (and closed) in the downtown of our town. 12 years later, the mall has about 30% empty spaces, no traffic, and they rent space out to a church, a local theater group, and a community meeting room.
And all the good shops for me went out of business, Kb toys, Waldenbooks, etc. even a store like Spencer's used to have some interesting pop culture stuff & toys, now it's sex stuff and Fword tshirt a. No reason to go there for high priced kids clothing stores.

Yea local mall I used to go here in Maryland. Hunt Valley Mall closed down 10 years ago. They tore down the mall and put one of those outdoor style malls buts its not the same. The mall was never as big as some of the other malls around here but it had it's charm and a flood of memories for me. I get sad just thinking about it.
Here is a good article on the mall with pics that could easily be on the abandoned malls site.
redevelopment, malls, growth, dead malls, stores, commercial, brown fields, grey fields, gray fields, retail, big box, chains, department, anchor

we had a mall that was going down and then they converted it to a "factory" store mall and added Target -- now I can't get a parking space there.
