That is most excellent news. What a despicable human being. And, if you haven't watched the documentaries on Westboro Baptist CHurch on youtube, it's freakin eye-opening. Fred was far from the most psycho in their group, he was merely the founder. Those people make me feel all warm and fuzzy about chemical warfare an nerve gas.
I almost had a psychic girlfriend but she dumped me before we met.
If anyone here believes in psychokinesis, please raise my hand.
Hard to sum up what I think of Mr Phelps and his WBC without resorting to the same venomous name calling he used on a regular basis.
I just hope someone upstairs is paying attention and will inform Mr Phelps how desperately wrong he interpreted the bible before sending him on a one way karma-riffic elevator ride down where it gets really hot.
Matthew 22:36-40 ... Jesus himself said there are only two commandments. Love God and love your neighbour. Doesn't say anything there about being a colossal jerk to people. Or trying to make someone's life miserable.
I'm in the minority, but I felt sad hearing this. I feel like it was a wasted life and had hoped he would have reached out to the gay community seeking forgiveness. He knew he was dying for some time and he could have at least tried to do some good. The fact he didn't is tragic in my opinion, because I don't get a charge out of seeing anyone being so needlessly wrongheaded and then dying without at least attempting to rectify things.
I like what Marty wrote above. People do things I disagree with all the time. I even do things I think are wrong far too often. Whatever the case, I'm not helping the world in any meaningful way by pointing these perceived flaws out to people that already have enough to deal with. I just wonder if Phelps would have approached people with a spirit of service how much more good he could have done. It's not like people working soup kitchens are weeding out gays--you're there to help people that need a hand. A bit of that could have went a long way, and now it's too late for him to fix that after doing so much damage.
A profoundly hate filled human being that clearly relished the pain and misery his words and actions caused. A real sociopath. Hopefully the remaining family members still in the cult will disband it and not continue his legacy of hate onto another generation.
You are a bold and courageous person, afraid of nothing. High on a hill top near your home, there stands a dilapidated old mansion. Some say the place is haunted, but you don't believe in such myths. One dark and stormy night, a light appears in the topmost window in the tower of the old house. You decide to investigate... and you never return...
I hope family members from every family that his cult ever hurt with their boycotts shows up and boycotts his funeral. would serve the miserable ******* right.
and yes, I hope the rest of his cult disbands now. they are hate filled people

Actually, I think the best thing they could do would be to pay it no attention whatsoever.
To me, Fred Phelps is a personification of Evil, not particularly because of what he says/said, or who he says/said it about, but because of what he does (or "did") in order to ride out a large power trip. This guy, like another familiar similar character, Charles Manson, has manipulated others that loved him, that obeyed him, and who thought as he wanted them to think. Phelps ruined these people for happiness in society. Worse (and odder) still, these manipulated people were Phelps' own family---kids, grandkids---amazing abuse of power.
Phelps' followers fed off the hate that they themselves enabled Phelps to enable THEM with, like some kind of impressively sad, tragic, amazing "hate circulation circuit".
I'd say that if there is an afterlife, that if a man like Fred Phelps doesn't exist in chaos in death, then, I don't know who would.
Do I hate a guy like this?
Surprisingly, not that much. Not as much, as say, a "Jodi Arias": someone who is just as self-centered and manipulative, but who actually murders people with the same spite, remorselessness, and ill will that only cause people like Phelps to be, after all is said and done "an annoyance at funerals".
"No. No no no no no no. You done got me talkin' politics. I didn't wanna'. Like I said y'all, I'm just happy to be alive. I think I'll scoot over here right by this winda', let this beautiful carriage rock me to sleep, and dream about how lucky I am." - Chris Mannix
Wouldn't it be something if after all this, they discovered he had a computer full of gay porn?
It'd be of note... but, frankly, I don't think it'd shock too many of us here... not as much, as say, if his computer contained links to sites like megomuseum.com, and his secret bedroom closets were full of items like "MOC Mego Iron Mans".
In other words, guys like Fred Phelps are obviously quite disturbed (SOME thing in his life has created that "monster")... and, I'm pretty positive he's got a "computer gay porn" level of odd (unexpected in the context of outward appearances) "behavioral stuff" (or worse) going on, but we'll probably never know just what that stuff is. Or, heck, maybe a few tell-all books from family members (who are okay with releasing that "stuff" now that he's dead) will indeed reveal that "stuff" sooner than later. Time will tell.

While I ignored Mr.Phelps and his "Church" I'll not deny the horrible and reprehensible actions and hateful things they've done, his was a truly wasted life.
