I'm curious for those of you that have kids old enough that receive allowance what is an appropriate amount.
We have a 13 year old, an 11 year old, and a 7 year old. When we started giving them allowances a couple of years ago, the 7 year old received $1, the 10 year old $2, and the 13 year old $3 per week but there really were no chores.
Last year, they complained that the amount was too small and the younger ones felt there was inequity in the allowance based on age....so we gave them all $5 a week and expected them to complete occassional chores, clean their room, help out with recycling, help unload the dishwasher, etc.
This year, they asked for yet another raise on the premise that we don't just go around buying video games or other types of items they would like to have outside of Christmas, Birthdays, etc. So we agreed to raise their rate to $8 per week each but now it includes very distinct chores. The three of them have to put away clean dishes from the dishwasher, clean their rooms once a week, and clean the basement every so often when it gets out of hand (since they are the ones that use it).
In addition, they rotate turns each week so one is responsible for placing recyclables in the bin and taking it to the corner on the day the recycle truck comes by, one is responsible for pulling trash bags and taking the cans to the curb on trash day (I help the younger ones drag them to the curb if they are heavy), and one of them helps clean the kitchen. I typically load the dishwasher and get it running and they are only responsible for washing a couple pans used and wiping down the table and counters. The kitchen is the toughest job and recycling is the easiest which is why they rotate jobs each week. We help the youngest one a little more and the older one less. If one of them decides they aren't going to complete a chore, we tell them that we will complete it but $x will come out of their allowance for us to complete the chore for them.
Everything seems to be working well so far. I'm just curious what others are doleing out in allowances these days.
