    The best show on TV...COSMOS

Brings me back to when I was a kid on Sunday nights watching the Wonderful World Of Disney in the living room with the whole family and sometimes extended family of aunts, uncles, and cousins. It's a show that IMHO can be enjoyed by the whole family. Great show. What I found amusing is one of the executive producers of the show is Seth McFarlane of Family Guy fame.
"When not too many people can see we're all the same
And because of all their tears,
Their eyes can't hope to see
    The beauty that surrounds them
    Isn't it a pity".

    Great show for sure.
It does have that 70's mutual of Omaha / in search of/ world of Disney feel to it. The special effects are cool and I am really digging the host, Mr. Tyson
I saw the first episode and looking forward to the rest. I Want to watch with my daughter and explore and learn together.

My wife and I have both been LOVING IT and it's the only show since the finale of Breaking Bad we've been making plans around to watch.

I'm a huge fan of the 1980 Carl Sagan series, and I think Neil deGrasse Tyson has done a fantastic job with the update. The Sagan tribute at the end of the first episode put a pretty big lump in my throat, and at the end of episode 2 they used the same evolution animation as the original series as a little tip of the hat. Great stuff.

alex, this is the series we're talking about. It's a 13 episode mini-series on Sunday at 9 EST on Fox - it's meant to be a scientific introduction to everything we know about the cosmos done in a very entertaining and engaging way:

I'm normally not a huge Seth McFarlane fan, but apparently without him this show would have never happened. He's a huge fan of Sagan and the original series and he used his clout at Fox to get this made.

I really hope this is a hit. I'd love to see more shows like this on TV.

Great show...but you can catch similar stuff all the time on the Science Channel, Discovery, etc...

Through the Wormhole with Morgan Freeman is a perfect example.

Personally I think the two shows are very different. "Through the Wormhole", I felt, wasn't really teaching the basics of science, it was sort of just going through scientific ideas to discuss popular philosophy, religious ideas, or sci-fi style fringe science. Which is fine, just different than Cosmos.

To me "Cosmos" is a show with teaching basic science as it's first purpose. It's structured with a deliberate pace to give a more detailed primer for everything we know - in a way that also details the process of scientific thinking. I find there's a lot less mystery dangling and more concentration on each topic involved. Also, the fact that it's a primetime network show automatically makes it different, and will hopefully give it a different audience than the shows on Discovery or Science Channel. Know what I mean?

                  ––

For Cosmology I did like "How the Universe Works" from a few years ago - though the pacing was so fast it skipped over some interesting key points every once in a while.

For nature I recently enjoyed "Attenborough's Ark" and "Wonders of Life" - both by the BBC.

I really enjoying watching this with my son. It brings back found memory of me watching the original with my dad.

It's a great show. I'm glad to see some unapologetic, real science back in prime time on a major network.
                      Fresh, not from concentrate.

Couldn't have said it better myself. The teaching aspect of it is what separates it. I hope it inspires more kids to get into science.

They do have a section on their website for Teachers to use the series as a teaching tool...

I feel they've dumbed it down from the original. The cartoons with not so subtle overtones feel like a crafty way for Seth mcfarlane to poke jabs at those organizations he is very vocal against. Degrasse Tyson is wonderful though.
