Gravity swept all the visual categories, and Cuaron got the director nod for putting it all together.
But as soon as 12 Years a Slave got best adapted screenplay, I knew it could win best picture, plus all the acting was fantastic...its story just trumped the simplistic one note storyline of Gravity.
I personally liked 12 Years a Slave more than Gravity...while Gravity is visually stunning...12 Years is the much more powerful and haunting of the two...I'd say good choice.Last edited by Hector; Mar 3, '14, 4:00 AM.sigpicComment

I definitely need to check out 12 Years a Slave. I'm going to watch Nebraska later On Demand. Glad to see Matthew McConaughey and Jarred Leto get the wins for Dallas Buyers Club, as well as Cate Blanchett for Blue Jasmine, even though I was pulling for Meryl Streep."Trying is the first step towards failure." - H. Mostly everyone who I thought was going to win won, but what was up with drunk azz John Travolta introducing Idina Menzel as Adele Dazeem...seriously wth? easiest thing to do read off the prompter and he blew it....and what the heck was sitting on his head that rug was horrible....lolComment

I only saw a few moments of the show, I find Ellen really hacky, so it's painful to sit through.
Bill Murray is my hero, he was prior to this but i now feel justified.
John Travolta is a self important dolt.
The girl who won for 12 years a Slave gave a wonderful speech.Places to find PlaidStallions online: https://linktr.ee/Plaidstallions

You basically stole my thoughts. Agreed on all points.Comment

Lupita Nyong'o was stunning, and her speech was great. The only true 'movie star' moment I've seen on that show in ages.
Murray mentioning Ramis was fantastic to hear. His only other public statement (that I know of) was a little odd - so it was great to see a sweet side from him.
McConaughey's speech was insane in the most perfect way. What a lunatic. When he got his J.K.L. catch phrase in there it almost killed me.Comment

The Oscars was always a huge event for my Mom. When I was growing up we never missed one and us kids even got to stay up on a "school night".
But it has just not caught on in my own house hold with my own children. Not sure if it's the product on the screen, the lack of Hollywood magic or just the generational differences.
So aside from catching a highlight or two this morning I once again missed the show.
