Collection crisis...I need your advice.

I've totally stripped my collection down.
I dumped comics,star wars,gi joes,SMDM any 3 3/4 figure and all other figures and stuck with the mego and remego 8" only.
Nothing carded everything loose so I can display and change poses.
Simplified if you will I was all over the place with my collecting.
Good luck it aint easy letting go of any of it...LOL

go with what you love. I thinned things a bit last year too. it happens to us all. I find that the longer I collect the more stuff/duplicates etc builds up. a good thinning out every few years is necessary or you become a hoarder, LOL

I'm pushing 50 as well, and I find it a little easier to let stuff go.
My toy room is almost exploding (I hate putting stuff on the floor instead of on a shelf), so I also need to thin the herd.
What troubles me most is selling items of which I know they're worth a certain amount, but you can't find the right buyer. I hate selling something for half the price, just to make room or to make some money.

My cunning plan is this: I'll put up two display cases, and then start putting in my all-time favorites. At a certain point, they'll be full. And that should suffice. All the rest will be "stuff that could be sold".
It has always been our dream to go live in another country, and I know that I will never be able to take that whole toy museum with me. Actually, I'd like my favorites to fit into two suitcases. Kind of like a traveling museum.

been there. I dont do playsets or vehicles for just that reason. Ive even parted with some mego lines that had no historic value to me personally. I decided WGSH and AJ were my only childhood megos and they are displayed. I had the LJN figs too and they are out also. The rest goes to customs and some others Ive grown fond of. I say what good is having it if you cant see it.

Rotate your collection dude. Do it quarterly so it's not too overwhelming.

You are me and star trek. At one point, my main room was all trek and slowly, I found myself wanting to feature some of my non trek stuff on my shelves. Now, although still 50% trek, my main room has all of my favorite newer stuff and my back room has all of my childhood stuff. It's hard to feel like you aren't cheating. Is that a strange thought?

That's exactly it...it's really bizarre. During the move I was so excited about having the toy room I'd dreamed of for years, but when I started working on it, it felt...wrong somehow. Like my heart just wasn't in it. Now I feel re-energized and excited about the possibilities.

Right there with you. I have a lot of varied interests with my collection. Although it revolves mainly around figures and Halloween masks, there are a lot of different vintage and modern lines that I've collected over the years. These days I have as much tucked away in the closet as I do on the shelves. It's hard for me to get motivated to start selling mainly due to the hassle that goes along with it. From photographing everything to packing and shipping, it's just a lot of work.

One of the things that really got me thinking about the direction of my collection was Brian's awesome Rack Toys book...I have or have had a lot of things from that book, and focusing on just one property made me realize just how much stuff I was missing out on.

Hey D. I would just put out some of your favorite things so you can enjoy them without having to dig threw boxes to see them but I would keep some stuff close at hand so every now and then you can change things up a little. Oh and if you go to move any Hot Toys call me first ;-)
