    Is Mickey Mouse dead?

He's little more than a mascot at this point, isn't he? I've heard there's a new feature film in the works, but it's been ages since his peak. Do you think he is still a strong character or would Disney's current leadership not know how to handle such an old icon, as evidenced by the shakiness of John Carter and the Lone Ranger? Just curious what you guys think.

Did you see Frozen? The short in the beginning was a full out Mickey Mouse cartoon. Possibly the best Pixar short ever. It may be the most relevant he's been in years but it was a great way to bring him back.

The problem with John Carter of Mars and the Lone Ranger is that the writers had NO knowledge of the material, beyond what they saw on TV reruns.

My DAD could have written better scripts than those idiots!

He grew up during the Great Depression and used to listen to the Lone Ranger on the radio, and I forget if John Carter was just a comic or both a comic and a radio show.

In any case, my dad has forgotten more about the Lone Ranger than those dimwits will ever learn.

For one thing, for the role of Tonto, they should have hired someone who WAS Native American, and not simply a wannabe simply because of that actor's name.

Johnny Depp is one of my favorite actors, but in THIS case? Fugheddaboutit!

I didn't see John Carter, because I just had the sneaky feeling that it was going to tank from the minute they announced that they were making it.

Kind of like Alec Baldwin when he was in 'The Shadow'.

Or that other guy in 'The Phantom'.

Both great comics and radio shows, but in the hands of the writer's of today? Stinkbomb material all around.

Which is a shame, because they all had great roots in the pulp magazines of the 30's.

Mickey is still pretty popular on Disney Jr. Mickey Mouse Clubhouse lasted like 7 seasons so there will be a whole new generation who grew/grows up with Mickey.

They need to rid those rules for educational programming on network television and bring back some of those weekend/weekday shows. Kids without cable have nothing to watch in their age group.

John Carter was an excellent movie and our family loves it. It just got too much bad press and never reccovered.

I saw both John Carter and Lone Ranger in the theater, and liked both. It's hard to imagine Disney not knowing how to market something, but they blew it big time on both of those.

Andrew Stanton(did Iron Giant, and a ton of great Pixar movies) was writer and director on John Carter and he had his hands full with it. It's a tough story to translate to a movie. If you saw it, you noticed it had something story elements similar to Avatar, although John Carter's story was written in 1911.

              Wha?

Mickey Mouse Club House just ended a 7 year run in December and still airs in heavy rotation on Disney Jr.

There's loads of popular Mickey Mouse toys in stores.

There's also new series of Mickey Mouse shorts in production.

You decide to investigate... and you never return...

Mickey Mouse is pretty far from being dead, but I do understand the question (I might even think the same if I didn't have a toddler). You need to take a visit to WDW (I'll be there for 10 days, only 2 more weeks to go!!), he's a hugely recognizable figurehead for kids and adults. He's not the most popular character for character meet and greets (that title would belong to the various Disney Princesses) but remains a popular character non the less.

Oh and Disney's Epic Mickey was huge on the Wii system worldwide. There's also a touring Mickey and friends "Live" that tours.

I forgot to mention the Epic Mickey video games. They got mixed reviews, but I liked them.

You beat me to it. Epic Mickey just got some playtime in my house over the cold snap, and one of my son's has a huge Mickey collection and a Mickey bedroom. Plenty of toys on the shelves, fabric at Joann galore, etc. He is still a major player at all the Disney stores too. From my perspective, he's in better health with the younger kids than DC or Marvel right now.

Yeah, Mickey is still huge. My kids are big fans and grew up with him since they were babies (I remember watching the classic 1930's and 40's shorts with them all the time). Epic Mickey definitely helped, and the second game was especially cool because it brought Oswald the Rabbit back into relevance after what, 75 years or so? That was great.

The fact that my pre-schoolers still know who Mickey Mouse is tells me he's still alive and kickin'!

I wish. I absolutely hate him. Hated him as a kid. I never, ever had any desire to go to Disneyland. I thought the entire stable of Walt Disney cartoon characters were just terrible. I never found any of them the least bit funny or entertaining. Give me good old Looney Tunes any day.

That has got to be a first! I have never heard of anyone who actually HATED Mickey Mouse and Disney characters!
