Absolutely furious with Barnes & Noble!!!

I have one of those preferred reader cards from them for which they charge a $25 annual membership fee.
My current membership doesn't expire until January, and I had no intention of renewing it because quite frankly their prices on DVDs are so high even with the discount it's still cheaper to buy them elsewhere.

At 1:45 A.M. this morning they AUTOMATICALLY renewed my membership and charged my debit card $25!!!
They had absolutely NO authorization to do this, and how the hell did they get my debit card number anyway?!! I am beyond livid. Not only did they not have permission to do this, but obviously they're doing it stealthily in the middle of the night..hoping maybe people won't notice?

You better believe someone at the store is gonna face my wrath as soon as they open this morning.

Barnes and Noble likely has one of those auto-renew clauses stuck somewhere deep in the language of the membership agreement. It's reminiscent of the 80's and the mail order video libraries you would buy into that never stopped unless you made a fuss. Barnes and Noble need to move into the 21st Century business model. Hope you get that resolved.

Also similar to "get 3 free months of HBO" from your cable or satellite provider. If you don't call them before the end of the 3 months, you keep the channels, and they charge you for them.

I'm sure you're right...thing is, I never saw any agreement. I was one of those people they recruited at the register while I was checking out. I never saw anything in writing, nor did I sign anything. They asked for my name, phone number and email...that's it.

"Preferred reader cards"? Wow, that brings me back to the '80s and Walden Books

So how did the wrath go?

Sounds more like the clerk who rung this up for you screwed up. They are suppose to ask IF YOU WANT auto-renew or not. So if you told them no they clicked the wrong box. I have the card too but I do not have auto renew so quite a few times mine has ran out and I renew it myself a few weeks later at the store. So I would not exactly blame Barnes and Noble but rather the person who did this for you since it was they, who made the error

I used to have one of those at Borders, and got some good deals. But that was free to join...I refuse to pay a company to shop or use their stores, same reason I will not get a Sams club membership.

That's completely different from what I had to do. I had to fill out a form, but that was it.

And I don't get renewed automatically; they tell me at the register that my card is going to expire and ask me if I want to renew it right there.

Complain to management, or better yet, go to the website and contact them personally. That usually works.

Does this mean the post office gets a temporary reprieve from your wrath?

Actually, I had a talk with DAR (Short for Darlene, I found out) yesterday...she says she didn't see the bin before. I noticed she was talking on her cell phone while delivering mail. That probably explains it. We're all good now though...she knows to use the bin.

Perhaps you can introduce Darlene to the bin. Up close.

I believe Sheldon in Big Bang had made a list of his enemies. Started in the late 80s on a floppy disk...

I had one for Books A Million and they just signed you for the year and asked if you wanted to renew when it was up.
