The Secret Life oF Walter Mitty

I saw the Secret Life Of Walter Mitty tonight and have to say it was every bit as good as I expected it to be. I usually don't go in for these uplifting feel good stories but this one worked well and even though I could sense the ending coming from a mile away, I loved the big reveal in the final seconds of the film. The movie has some great moments in between the awesome opening and fitting closing too.

A couple of things to keep in mind which I think a lot of people are missing. The movie is an adaptation of the original short story. The name "Walter Mitty" is the same in both the short story and movie. He daydreams a lot. That is pretty much all that is taken from Thurber's original. From there the movie is entirely different. In fact other than those two things, they could have called the movie something else and I don't think I would have even made a connection between Walter Mitty the story and Walter Mitty the movie.

You also need to realize this is not a comedy. There are a few chuckles here and there but don't expect an all out Zoolander or Meet The Fockers. It's more like a "little engine that could" underdog story. It's also not ridiculous in the way something like Night At The Museum was or campy like Starsky & Hutch. This is not a typical Ben Stiller movie and that is a very good thing. Owen Wilson does not show up in a cameo role. Nor does Vince Vaughn. It's Ben Stiller as an actor and director, not a comedian making a movie with friends. It's easily his best movie since, well since ever.

Also Kristen Wiig. For a "comedy only" actress, she's amazing in this. Between this and Girl Most likely, you can see despite being incredibly funny in a movie like Bridesmaids, she can actually act in a serious role when she given the opportunity.

It's a great movie for the whole family to see too and absolutely perfect to come out this time of year. It's easily one of the top five movies I've seen this year.

I heard mentioned that this is sorta the new Forest Gump. Is it anywhere near that good?

My favorite Ben Stiller movie is Dodgeball and There's Something About Mary, lol.

I'm not commenting on Walter Mitty until I see it...I respect spacecaps' opinion, and I'll hold judgement until the film viewing.

It's not as epic as Forrest Gump but truth be told, the second time I tried to watch Forrest Gump I wanted to throttle the guy. Don't get me wrong, I loved it the first time but I couldn't sit through it a second time. I do want to rematch Gump again soon with my son though so I haven't written it off completely but I remember the second time trying to watch it around the time when it came out in the video stores for rental, it not being as good as the first sit through. But no, this isn't Forrest Gump and Stiller isn't going to win any Oscars for this but you gotta like his efforts here though. Something About Mary is probably Stillers best film overall but it be like comparing Tom Hanks' Big to his Castaway (which is more of an accurate comparison to a Hanks movie than Forrest Gump for Walter Mitty.) Going in to this thinking this is the "Next Forrest Gump" will probably leave you feeling shorted. It's not that and it has almost none of the historical references Gump had and no Stiller isn't going to become Tom Hanks. I think it's a pretty unfair comparison since Hanks rarely makes a bad film but I could see Stiller doing more of these types of films down the road instead of straight Dodgeball like slapstick.

I'm interested in this, but not sure if it's a theater experience for me or not. The actor that flicks Walter with something in the commercial always seems to play that kind of jerk, like in Step Brothers. I just want to reach through the screen and throat punch him. He's really good at that.

This one is going to be simple for me, if it somehow fits in during a day out or I need a movie to see I'll go. Almost always I can tell my the trailers how much I will like a movie. This looks like I will like enough, but it's doesn't give the me the I HAVE to see it vibe.

Is the music as good in the movie as it is in the trailers? I kinda want to see it simply because they used the music to great effect in the teasers. The first, with Of Monsters and Men's Dirty Paws and then with Queen's Bohemian Rhapsody were just great.

How would you compare it to the original Kaye film, which I've seen several times?
WANTED: Dick Grayson SI trousers; gray AJ Mustang horse; vintage RC Batman (Bruce Wayne) head; minty Wolfman tights; mint Black Knight sword; minty Launcelot boots; Lion Rock (pale) Dracula & Mummy heads; Lion Rock Franky squared boots; Wayne Foundation blue furniture; Flash Gordon/Ming (10") unbroken holsters; CHiPs gloved arms; POTA T2 tan body; CTVT/vintage Friar Tuck robes, BBP TZ Burgess Meredith glasses.

But if you watch parks and recreation, that same actor does a great job at being incredibly like able and nerdy. I was shocked.....

I've never seen a Ben Stiller movie I liked, so I've been avoiding his movies for quite some time now.

I've never watched that show. I'm sure he's not like that in real life, but he plays the weasly bully well.
