It's no coincidence that McDonald's runs promotions on their Filet O'Fish Sandwiches during Lent.

That brings back memories for me
Good Friday it was always McDonalds Filet O'Fish for lunch
    I liked it too

When Americans use it as an excuse to hold a drunken party, it doesn't mean that the day itself is considered a "big deal" to us. We party because we're told by the media that it's traditional to party on that day. Without the support of the media, and businesses like Guinness, Hallmark, Butterball, and others that profit from them, most holidays would fade away.
Good point. I'm not a big fan of Valentine's Day because of the commercialism involved but feel obligated to purchase my S.O. a card and flowers because if I didn't, commercialism, media, etc. sends a message that you don't care for that person. What about the way you treat them the remaining 364 days of the year or 365 this year.

I would say that Us Irish-Immigrant's...have definately turned it into a reason to celibrate Our Heritage. And as an Irish/America...let Me tell You...I don't need an excuse to drink! But for Me personally...it's a chance to get together with My Brother...and make a toast to Our Dad...who is no longer with Us.

I use to think the same thing when I was a kid. So much that I had a bad experience so I won't go into details.

But a couple of years ago when I was making a trip down to Portland, I pulled over and on a whim just ordered one. WOW. They must have changed it because the taste was not familiar. It was good.:

My point to begin with- that this effort by Guiness was not about creating a holiday. Its about promoting a product.

I would go into more, but as a member of the media, I'm off to one of those meetings where we secretly decide how we will control another aspect of your lives. I think we may either bring down Hillary Clinton or perhaps bring back the leisure suit. We haven't decided yet.

Its the same for me. My Great-grandparents came right off the boat and settled in Kentucky where they could continue a similar lifestyle. We celebrate St.Patrick's Day as an honor to those passed away and our great heritage.

My daughter always feels left out on St. Patrick's day because we have no Irish blood running through us to the best of my knowledge and she wants to be able to celebrate her heritage. I tried to explain to her that most people don't even know their heritage so many people who claim to be Irish are not. Years ago, I spent quite a bit of time doing genealogical research on my family. The furthest I can take it back on one side is an ancestor from Scotland (great, great, great grandfather) and German (great, great, great, great grandfather/grandmother). On the other side it's German and English.

My wife doesn't know much of her ancestry other than she is part Polish, English, and German.

I'm Polish/Ukrainian, but on St Paddys Day, I consider myself an honorary Irishman

I say, give the Irish their day and make it official
