surprised no one has commented about this. he was a great man. I know he has been ill the past few months and that he had a good long life, but it is still sad to see him gone. Rest in Peace!

A great leader and a great man. To think that he was jailed for 27 years for something we take advantage of every day: civil rights/human rights and the right to protest about what we see as a wrong that needs to be righted. This video of "Sun City" has images of what was going on in South Africa. People being beaten in the streets because they were thought to be less than human. Thank God for people like Nelson Mandela standing up for the rights of all black South Africans to be counted as somebody. To be treated as a human being:

I was watching the Doctor Who Special again, and words by John Hurt struck me: "Great men are forged in fire, it is the privilege of lesser men to light the flame".
To me, that describes what Mandela was all about. He was named "Spear of the Nation", very appropriate..
