How "metal" are you? Another silly checklist...

I stumbled across another one of those checklists that seem to be floating around lately. This one features 100 metal albums. Well, some of these bands I wouldn't really consider "metal". As much as I love "Appetite for Destruction" and "The Real Thing" (a couple of my favourite albums actually) I'd consider G'NR hard rock, not metal, and I'm not really sure how I would classify Faith No More, but not metal, they just have some metal influences as well as many others.

From Wikipedia: "Heavy metal (or simply metal) is a genre of rock music that developed in the late 1960s and early 1970s, largely in the...

I've listened to about 40 all the way through, plus have probably heard a couple songs from at least two dozen or so more of the albums on the list. Some of the other albums I've always been meaning to pick up, and in some artists' cases, I've heard different albums from them but not the one on this list (i.e. I've heard Death's second LP "Leprosy" but not their debut "Scream Bloody Gore", I've never heard Fates Warning's "No Exit" but I used to listen to their albums that came out before that one). There is a lot of black metal and thrash on the list, which I have heard a lot of, so that helped my score. There are less than 20 that I am completely unfamiliar with. So I guess I'm fairly "metal".

That list has Def Leppard on it, therefor it is invalid. It's missing a lot of influential and great metal bands and albums IMHO.

While I often pass the time with these list challenges, most of them kind of suck or are poorly researched. When you see 80s movies in a "greatest hits of the 70s" list, then somebody failed.

I scored 80 and I own nearly everyone I've heard. Some things don't belong on that list...like Korn, Tool and System of a Down. Even Soundgarden and Ministry.

46 - the further down the list I went, the more I was out of my element.

52, and I think Van Halen is kinda stretching it a lot.

I don't see bands like Scorpions and GNR as metal. That's rock in my book. To me metal is a little more thematic and more about guitar shredding.

I think the only way of proving that your metal is by rocking a mullet and a jean jacket with band names written on it. If this is you in 2013/2014 then you sir are Metal.

I'd tend to agree with you based on most of their output, but they are generally considered a part of the "New Wave of British Heavy Metal", so I'll give them a bit of a pass.

Sorry man, but the album is called "Stained Class". Clever wordplay, eh?

Heavy metal is really tough to classify at times, I read an epic thread on the Steve Hoffman forum (a real music geek forum) where someone broke down metal into all it's different subgenres, and tried to classify all the different bands into each catagory. Quite a bit of arguments as you could imagine.

Personally, I wouldn't classify Guns N Roses, Faith No More, Rainbow, Rage Against the Machine, Sound Garden, Ministry or Tool as metal, probably some of the others on the list too. And yes, there are tons of albums more deserving that are MIA here. I just dig a bunch of the albums that are on the list, so thought I'd post it. But it is missing one of my favourites, Cradle of Filth, so it gets negative points from me there. Nice to see Bathory, Celtic Frost and Mercyful Fate represented though (but what about King Diamond's "Abigail"?? I ended up naming my daughter after that classic album )

Sodom, there's another omission I forgot about. It's nice that the list has Kreator's "Pleasure to Kill" album, but it's missing albums from the other two of the "big three" of German thrash, Sodom and Destruction. I love "Persecution Mania" and "Agent Orange"
