Gary Gygax, co-creator of D&D, dies

The Associated Press: Dungeons Dragons Co-Creator Dies at 69

I was sorry to read this. I played quite a bit of D&D around 1983-86, and had lots of fun with the friends I grew up with.

Wow, that's a name I haven't uttered or even heard much in the past 20 years. I'll pony up to being a complete D&D freak for about 4 years. Definitely too young for his life points to have expired.

    RIP DM Gygax!

I could never play D & D, I tried but it never took to me. I will attest that I was somewhat odd man out because of it, during the early eighties it was just everywhere.

Odd man out is how I felt initially too. For some reason I didn't play it with my friends at first, and I remember clueless frustration during all the discussions about it. I eventually caught on and joined in..

Wow, like Paul, that name was a blast from the past. Played a little, but I got in trouble with the regulars for doing things that weren't "in the rules."

Exactly what happened to me, got booted out of my only game. I couldn't grasp the parameters so I just went a little wild and didn't take it seriously.

Our group didn't take it as seriously as some, no doubt. Some rules we never bothered to follow much, such as encumbrance.

I've always been a closet geek but none of my friends were. I always envied the dorks that rolled out characters during lunch time in junior high. But being that none of my friends played D&D, I never played. However, I did play RPG's on my apple II but never the "pencil and paper" kind.

To this day I own the old D&D hardback guides because the primitive fantasy drawings in them rule.

                      RIP Gygax.

I still have all the manuals and modules packed away too, as well as some boxed TSR miniatures, which I remember buying at the local Waldenbooks back in the day.. :

Wow. That's unexpected. He just showed up on the first season of Code Monkeys.
