I remember when I lived in Wisconsin, I got my mom's recipe for sweet potato pie, made 3 of them (from scratch!), and took 2 of them to my school. Pretty much everyone had the same reaction; they thought it was pumpkin pie, they never heard of sweet potato pie, and they all LOVED it. Our maintenence man had 3 pieces!

Pumpkin Pie vs Sweet Potato Pie

My sister and I are now in the larger neighboring town where our grandmother lives. I am cleaning her apartment while my sister is taking her to a doctor appointment. Early today, we got her groceries and while in the store here, I saw sweet potato pies. I should always give new foods a try, so I bought it. We will be trying it when my sister and grandmother return. Verdict in a couple hours.tmp_IMG_20131126_133545_412640695853.jpgsigpicComment

I love both, but sweet potato wins by a nose. Also, I am amazed by the fact that so many people here haven't tried it or even heard of it.Comment

Just some little facts...the natural pumpkin flesh itself is not very flavorful, the spices and texture is what makes it a great pie.
Sweet potato on its own is flavorful...it's also a more nutritional food with more beneficial nutrients and vitamins...although the texture is not as smooth and creamy as pumpkin...it's a bit more "stringy".
So both have advantages and disadvantages.sigpicComment

Sorry for the late report. My grandma, my sister, hubby, and I all tried some. It was good, but we found this particular pie was a bit too spicy. In all fairness, maybe all are not. The texture was a little different also. But all in all, not too bad. I think we will still stick with pumpkin, but if sweet potato pie ever came our way again, we probably wouldn't turn it down.sigpicComment
