I thought so too. I was surprised. He looked great this year. I haven't seen the Packers doing too much this off season, I wonder if that has anything to do with it. I think they'd make the playoffs again this season if he came back and had a half way decent year.

I thought next season would be his last. He played great and even when his play was not as great he inspired others to play above their heads. What a career and a class act!

              About Time!

As a die-hard Bears fan, I've been looking forward to this day for quite a while.

As a fan of football, in general, it makes me sad to think he won't take the field again. At least he's going out on his own terms.

My hats off to him. 38 years old and playing some pretty darn good football in the NFL.

I know these guys are professional athletes but for those of us that are ahem in our late 30's, think about how much our bodies have aged and trying to compete with a typical NFL player who is on average about 24 or 25? The 13 year difference is huge.

Definitely a HOF quarterback who will get in during his first year of eligibility.

Wow! It seems like only yesterday when I found three of his rookie Starting Line Up pieces case fresh in the store. When in all actuality it has literally been years ago. Hopefully the value of his pieces will increase even more. I think that he is retiring at a good age and at a good time in his life. I wish him all the best with his retirement and or future endeavors.

That's funny...I remember the same thing. I can't remember if it was 1994 or 1995 but I think Drew Bledsoe's rookie SLU figure came out the same year (of course this wasn't their true rookie year but at least the first time they were featured as a figure).

I really haven't checked prices of SLU figures in a long time but know they are in the toilet (just a few years ago I picked up my grail SLU figure which was a 1989 Cal Ripken for about $75. During it's hey dey, it was selling for about $500-$600). I think I remember the Favre rookie figure selling for about $75-$80 back then but I suspect you can pick one up for around $20 or so.

My next door neighbor back in the 90's had so many Starting Lineups and spent enormous amounts of money on them. He must of had over $50,000 in them. I got rid of most of mine before the days of Ebay by placing an ad in Tuff Stuff only keeping the ones I really wanted. I always wondered if this neighbor held onto his even after the SLU market crashed as bad as the Beanie Baby craze. He definitely was a speculator in them because it was typical for him to have multiple copies of certain figures and I'm not talking about one or two but more like ten or twenty Brett Favres.

I give him alot of credit. he coudl easily have parlayed last season into another year or 2 (even if the next season was a klinker) but as he said the only reson that he would ahve come back be a win is to WIN the superbowl and that is a tall order for anyone. he goes out as a "winner" in every sense without any tarnish on his carreer by holding on too long. but part of me wants to see how his retirement stands up after training camps start and teams start to call

You are correct. The year was 1995 on the SLU package. I had bought up a lot of at the time "good" players and the value soared for a good couple of years. Then....just as you said in the years that followed over time the market totally tanked out on these. I have the Joe Montanna retirment piece also which was real hot. Both Ripken variations. That is just what I can remember off of the top of my head as stand outs back in the day. I had bought cases of those things (baseball, hockey, football) kind of like your neighbor only not to the extent of the $50,000 that he had spent. I sold some of my extas back in the late 90's and kept a big portion of the doubles and commons. No doubt they are probably not worth a lot these days as I have not checked prices in a good while. I was searching on eBay as a reference months or so ago. The sellers I seen that was selling these figures were pretty much giving them away compared to what they originally cost as the stores when they first came out. I "think" they were like around $6.00 if I can remember correctly. It has been a while you know. I made money on the big pieces at the time and kept the duds while building my own collection with the "good" pieces. I still have a lot stored away as I had held on to them thinking like most that "someday" they might just be like Mego's or an equivalent valued collectible. It is nice to hear from others such as yourself that has collected or atleast recollects the neat stuff back in the day as well. Like Mego's they bring back good memories in time. To me that is worth the price of holding on to them alone. I use to be big into baseball cards at one point in the early 80's to mid 90's. I was fortunate enough to get in on the 84, 85 Topps Rookie market which was HOT at that time as well. I just bought a Beckett price guide the other day. This is the first Beckett I have bought since the late 80's. Wow! How times have changed. I can remember paying like $2.00 for a Beckett back then. Back then I could hardly wait for the next Beckett to come out each month. Then in the early 90's I believe was the Baseball strike and that kind of put a bad taste in my mouth for a while. For whatever they are worth I still have those older Beckett issues stored as well. Again, good memories. I just paid like $10.00 for this new Beckett. I am going to see if I still have anything worth while in my card collection. I hope that they did not tank too bad like the SLU. At any rate it is nice hearing from you. Take care!
