actually, he's not my mayor (I'm two mayors over for the time being) but he's definitely somebody I've been watching for years.
If you live here, not a week goes by it seems where somebody isn't coming after the guy. He's a "cut the budget" type with little social graces and has made some powerful enemies.
The papers have stooped so low as to follow him to KFC when he's claimed to be on a diet, putting a photo of him holding a bucket on the front page. Honestly I think most of that endears him to the people more than anything.
This latest thing though, has kind of delved into outright buffoonery. I can't believe his bad judgement.
The rest of this stuff I chalk up to people kicking him when he's on the way down.

That, and he plays the city folk against the rest of the GTA. Divide and conquer has kept him in power.

It's a back and forth thing, I think. A lot of it he brings on himself, although there's a fair bit of the press just being nuissances. As I recall, his rise to infamy started with the DUI thing, and his fight with the cop. Now this....
IN some ways I think what endears him so much to the public is the sheer magnitude of things. He's more like a character from a bad action film than a real person. (Like his response to the accusations of harassment.... I did NOT see that coming! Or his rationalization that he MIGHT have done crack, but he was too drunk to know for sure.) Or a star who's currently imploding.... like the kind we've been subjected to for so long. Ried. Lohan. Spears. Ford.... Reality has caught up with unreality.
For normal folks this must be like how we'd feel if we saw Spiderman swinging from building to building in real life.
I tend to think it may have more to do with his decent track record of managing the city more than it being "the public thinks it's Duck Dynasty" theory.

I'd LIKE to agree with you, but I work with the public....
Yeah, I caught that last night. Their attempts at Canadian accents were kind of dubious and all over the map, the "CBC host" started drifting into an Irish accent at times, not sure what was up with that.

Yeah but look where you work. I have a friend who drives cab most nights, his vision of humanity is dark. Scary dark.

Kinda went to Minnesota too.
I have said for years that Ford doesn't appear to have a "good side", so I did laugh at that.

He's my mayor, although I didn't vote for him. He's just the latest in a series of comical mayors. I think our next Mayor is going to be named McCheese.
We only have 30% voter turnout, and it's been such a non-stop topic around here that my first question whenever a Torontonian brings it up is "Did you vote?" If not, then I just end the conversation.
I live a few doors over in Mayor "Britannia's" domain. Sorry about your Argos, Rob.
The SNL spoof reminded me of this little tidbit. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5FEW5mh7iAI
Ugh, without getting into the nitty-gritty of the politics, basically speaking nobody living IN the city's core voted for him. (That includes ME.)
Years ago Toronto's municipal boundaries were extended to include many of the surrounding suburban areas as a way to save money by reducing the size of government. The issue is that the city core and the surrounding areas have different needs. For example, car ownership is WAY up outside the city - inside the city much more people use public transit...so you can see where this would raise conflicts.
80% of Ford's votes came from the surrounding areas - which is the frustrating start to this mess.
Of course, his behaviour and his politics transcends left-right political issues, because he's actually a crazy person with no consistent vision. In any case, most of his power has been stripped now in city council, but this fiasco is far from over yet, and if he stays true to his promise there is going to be a lot of insanity in the next election,
