    Shrimp and Grits!!!!!

This was made all by me

Gourmet garlic grits with Gouda and Parm cheese, oven roasted shrimp and a light drizzle of etouffe sauce

here is the recipe if interested

    Makes four servings

    2 clove chopped garlic
    4 tbls of butter
    1 cup 1/2 & 1/2
    3 cup water
    dash of ground thyme
    Salt & pepper
1 cup stone ground white grits
    4oz smoked Gouda
4oz Parmesan cheese (I used plain old grated)

Put butter and garlic in sauce pan, heat over low heat until butter melts and sautee garlic for a few seconds. Add thyme, salt and pepper, continue stirring, so not to burn. Add cream. Heat on low, make sure not to boil or burn the cream, stir until mixed well, nicely heated.

Add the water and bring to a boil. Once boiling, add grits, constantly stirring and reduce heat. Stir until it comes thick. Remove from heat and add gouda and parm cheese, stir until melted and creamy.

Clean 1 pound shrimp (16-20) toss in olive oil, salt/pepper, garlic powder)

Roast on cookie sheet for about 8 minutes at 375 deg

The etouffe sauce was just a McCormicks packet, i didn't feel like messing with it. Follow instruction, boil a little longer to reduce. I only put a few spoon fulls on each serving.

I never made grits on my own before, but have had them...and they are delicious...yours look terrific...mail me a bowl, lol.

Here in my city...there's a southern style restaurant (owned by a Texan, and the staff is from Tennessee and Georgia) called Aunt Mary's Cafe...been there several times...it was featured in Diners, Drive-In's and Dives, here's the episode...look for the grits and shrimp dish being made (starting at 6:20)...similar to your dish (yours look like jumbo shrimp, yum)...it's a killer and hearty plate...

Thanks for the picture and recipe...I would like indeed to make and try it out...

I'm not a big grits eater, (despite the fact that I'm black), but when I do eat them, I like them as a hot cereal, w/ butter, syrup and canned milk.

So,....not once in my life have I have been someplace that serves grits. I have never seen them on a menu, nor in a store. Looking up grits on Wikipedia just now has not really helped me here. One paragraph called it a breakfast cereal, but it looks like oatmeal in the photos. Someone please describe to me what exactly grits are like.

We call that oatmeal or warm cream of wheat. Grits is not a black staple, its a southern staple. Grits are served with butter, salt/pepper, spices, and cheese.

I guess it would be considered a cereal since it is ground corn. It is not sweet, it is served with spices (like i mentioned above). A grit is tiny, about twice as big as a grain of salt (when dry, it swells when cooked). Down here in the south, it is served at every breakfast (for the most part). It really has no flavor, so it takes on the flavor of what ever it is served with (or flavored with). The texture is about the same as cream of wheat.

For a basic serving for breakfast, most put salt, pepper, butter, and cheese.

I only mentioned that b/c most black people I know eat grits b/c a lot of their families are southern. And if you must know, my dad started me eating it sweet, b/c I didn't like the other way. Grits can be eaten any way you want. I choose to eat it like cereal.

Thank you. That gives me the basic idea. When the article says cereal, my mind went to Cheerios and Frosted Flakes. Then my mind when to shrimp and Frosted Flakes, which was not appealing.

Let's get this correct, corn/grits is a Native American thing (a grain first domesticated by Olmecs and Mayans) ...later adopted by Southerners.

I thought Shrimp & Grits was a new show on the Disney Channel.

When I was out in CA for work I went to a Denny's for breakfast one Saturday. I overheard the family a couple of tables over from me asking the server about grits, which of course were on the menu. I laughed as she was trying to explain to them what they were, lol.

I like grits with butter, salt and pepper. I don't eat them a lot but I do eat them. And I don't consider them cereal by any means.
